teach ENglish in Asia

I'm interested in spending the summer after i graduate teaching in asia ( thailand, korea, china )

does anybody know anything about this?

i hear they are paid pretty well? 20usd/hr?

My dd taught English Korea for few months. She loved it. The thing to watch out for is that there are a lot of "shady" English schools. That means that you won't exactly get everything they promised you when they get you over there.

I would suggest googling things like ESL and specific country names. Look for discussion boards that the teachers over there frequent and read for awhile. You'll pick up a lot that way.

When my dd was there last year, she was paid $2,000/month + free housing + free use of a vehicle + free cell phone.

If you're interested still interested in teaching about you graduate from college (i.e. hold a BA/BS, etc.) you might want to look into the JET program if you are interested in Japan. Very nice and reputable program.

If you can become a private tutor for English in Korea, my cousin (read: she HASN'T GRADUATED FROM YALE YET) made like $40-50/hr. With a Teacher's degree, you can make up to like $70-$100/hr (korean equivalent of course, if you teach english for like the TOEFL or the SAT). And then of course, private schools will bend over backwards to hire you. It's a VERY hot market over there.

how do i get a job there? can you teach for only the summer? 3 months? i speak no korean

I think you can apply for Kaplan in Korea (or Princeton Review or whatever) and get a job there....the SAT program's only like two months in the summer. By the way, the teachers at Kaplan Korea (most of them) spoke NO Korean whatsoever.

Don't you need certification for TOEFL to teach in American schools? I checked out some of the courses and it's ridiculously expensive. How about current undergrads? I have an AA and will graduate from UCLA next year...is it possible to find a quality/high paying teaching job in the summer?

bump,

any other programs you'd recommend?
