Teach For America 2014 Corps

Hello everyone.

As the first Teach For America application is out, and due August 16th I thought I would create a 2014 Corps thread similar to the thread we had for last year.

Who here is excited, and hoping to be a 2014 Corps member? What region are you hoping to teach in?

Also, I am an accepted corps member through the junior application process, and would be happy to help anyone out who has any questions about the process.

If we have any current TFA teachers out there/alumni that would also like to share some insight not necessarily about the process, but words of advice or stories about their experiences then that would also be appreciated.

Hey!
I’m applying this year. I applied two years ago and made it through to the last interview, but didn’t get accepted. I had no clue what I was doing and had a horrible final interview, but I’m at the end of my teaching credential/masters program now and want to try again.

I’m trying to figure out when to apply. I’d like to apply for the first round so that I will have a better chance with placement and to know whether I made it before I started searching for student teaching placements, but I’m not sure about the dates. I had no problem scheduling the final interview for the date I wanted last time, but this time only two of the the final interview dates for the first round of applications are possible for me.

Does anyone know if it’s difficult getting the interview date you want during the first round? Also, I know some people go through to the final interview without doing the phone interview. When you’re notified do you get to sign up for your final interview date and begin the transcript, letter of rec process right away? Or do you still have to wait until everyone gets through the phone interviews?

Hi!

I am glad that there is a 2014 thread already created. I just read through the TfA thread from last year and it got me really excited but also nervous! This is my first time applying.
I submitted my application the first day it was available! Waiting until the 22nd to find out if I got an interview is going to be torture.
I have talked to a recruiter and took all of his advice to heart when updating my r

Hi everyone! I applied last year, but was in the last group to apply. I made it through the phone interview but was not invited to final interviews. I hope that was because they were out of slots, but of course will never know. I am applying for the first deadline this time, and hoping to get South Dakota!
I have been having problems with getting my application to go through to the Review and Submit section, the website just keeps saying it is processing my application for Review. I think they are doing maintenance on the website, and will try again each day…

Do any of you know what the likelihood of getting an interview is? Sorry I am a newbie at all this and am really nervous. I know they only take about 17% of people who actually apply…,

Hey everyone! SO stoked that this thread was made! I have had TFA sitting on the back of my mind for a few years now so I jumped on the early admission junior deadline. Despite the agonizing wait that is inevitable at each deadline, I thought it was a great experience!
I wish I had more people to get excited with though; school was out basically and I didn’t know anyone applying so I felt like a lot of my emotions were bottled up!

I graduate this December and I am so happy to already know that I have been extended an offer to the Northeast Ohio 2014 corps! It’s a weight of my chest and a few hundred dollars worth of PhD apps that never had to leave my wallet.

To answer someone else’s question- TFA is super confidential with their exact acceptance ratio but each year, it averages to be about 1/10. Honestly, they say it’s not about competition and I certainly HOPE that’s true… but… at the same time, they can only afford to train and manage so many corps members (and only so many spots that the districts allot TFA).

There were 12 people in my final interview and a couple really great people. A couple really not-as-great people and the rest seemed comparably qualified. I think everyone’s passion really shined through and it made the day quite fun. As far as the pass between the app to the final interview (no phone interview)… I am no help because I went through every step!

I’d LOVE LOVE LOVE to know if anyone else is placed in NE Ohio!

I was able to get my application submitted in time for the First Deadline. Now, for the wait until the 22nd to find out if there is hope for TFA in my future… I am going to try to keep really busy this week!

Hi Vebalogh,

I’m curious when you applied for the junior deadline acceptance with TFA, when you found out and most importantly how much time did TFA give you to respond to the offer? Also does anyone know in general how much time TFA gives students to respond to an offer?
Thanks!

The time line on the website shows (for First Deadline) that notification for those selected goes out on Oct 31 and acceptance must occur by Nov 13.
Not sure if all the deadlines have that same amount of time. Second Deadline is now open and is September 13…with the same notification and acceptance deadline dates.

I logged on to the applicant center and saw that I got a phone interview. Anyone else moving on?

I also moved on to the phone interview.

Unfortunately, I did not… I got further last year! Well…good luck to those who are moving on. I may apply again next year, we shall see. I really think that my age may be an obstacle here, but cannot say for sure.

Phone interview!
Anyone get directly sent to final interview?
Also does anyone know…do we need to send a link for the online activity to our recommenders? Or does TfA email it to them?

I moved on to the phone interview stage, as well. :)

Hello Everyone,

I am very happy to see that there is a 2014 thread already started for TFA. Thank you @Dracos!
I am super excited, I received notice that I have been invited straight to the Final Interview!! Good Luck to everyone!!!

I moved onto the phone interview! Does anyone know how difficult it is to move onto the final interview from this point?

I read somewhere that you get a phone interview if they have questions about your application and resume.

The phone interview is essentially an opportunity for you to talk more about your leadership positions, and conviction for applying for Teach for America. Being invited to a phone interview is by no means a ‘bad’ thing. Don’t freak out. If anything, it will only prepare you more as to the types of questions that TFA interviewers will ask you.

Can anyone tell me a little bit more about the online activity? What kind of questions are on there? What is it trying to measure in a candidate?

Thank you so much and good luck to everyone!

Hi all! I applied for the second deadline and found out yesterday that I’m moving straight to final interview. I would appreciate any tips alumni or previous interviewees have to offer! I am hoping to be placed in Northeast Ohio if I am accepted.
