Teach For America 2014 Corps

Take this with a grain of salt because this it’s from last year. My TF changed to complete shortly after the interview but I was waitlisted, so that on it’s own is not an indicator of acceptance per se, but I think it’s a good indicator. The true test is if it switches back to Under Review then back to complete very near to when the decisions are released (this did not happen for me).

@klh034 @tinitafinis–if you don’t mind, could you tell us what regions you highly preferred (sorry if you already did!), so maybe we can make some type of connection?..and have a little peace of mind lol

I love how stats driven we all are. Haha put us all together, and we go crazy!

@emac542: Don’t lose hope yet, especially since you submitted some of the TF documents a day late! I’m sure that makes a difference as far as when they review everything. I also submitted some of my documents on 10/19, and now I’m wishing I had gotten my act together earlier in case this will impact when/IF I see TF changes. Oh well. It is what it is!

@tinitafish: I also had a TFA related nightmare…LOL. We know we’re obsessing when TFA even consumes our dreams. And congrats klh034! Keeping fingers crossed for you!

And yes, good idea about trying to figure out if there’s any regional pattern to TF changes…we think of everything on this board :)

@TFAHopeful21 No problem, my highly preferred is New York City.

Just some separate advice: is everyone aware that we don’t get paid a salary until we start working in September? I discovered this after spending a great deal of time researching on the website. I’ve read complaints from people on blogs and know a friend who entered the corps without knowing this, so I wanted to give everyone a heads up just in case. During institute, we are expected to be able to support ourselves without a salary. I believe we do get the transitional funding during that time if we qualify, but I’ve heard whatever that sum is (and I believe it is based on cost of living in your location and your financial situation) tends to be minimal. So, if money is an issue for any of you (it certainly is for me) and you are admitted, start saving!

I just got back to my phone after being at the elementary school all day, and I had a missed call from a random Charlotte number. Couldn’t help but think it was TFA related, especially since that seems to be all that’s on my mind lately. And it was probably just a wrong number…

I’m sure I felt like you all at this point last year but to recap from our 2013 thread…

TF status changes from “Under Review” to “Complete” are a good sign that you’ve been accepted. It has nothing to do with whether you’ve been placed. Speaking from my experience, you get accepted and then you are placed. Two separate things. I was accepted, then bc I couldn’t be placed (5th DL) I was waitlisted (then re-accepted). My TF status did change a few days before the announcement (and ppls will continue to change up until that date; it doesn’t go in any order, doesn’t matter when you submit documents either).

@elemteacher: i’d think that personal call was a good sign…

Just throwing this out there: I checked my boyfriend’s TF page, and his status is now “Incomplete” because he needs to submit another document. But the documents he submitted have been verified. He interviewed on 10/17, the same day as me, and didn’t submit his TF application until yesterday. Now I’m officially nervous because I’m still “Under Review” and my documents haven’t even been looked at/verified.

There’s definitely a chance it really could be in no particular order. Last year, a lot of people didn’t see a status change until right before. I wouldn’t stress too much over it, though it would be exciting to see a status change. I had my interview on 10/16 and submitted 10/12, and I’ve seen nothing.

@TFAHopeful21, I highly preferred San Diego, Colorado, New Mexico, Nashville and Oklahoma.

I thought transitional funding was tied to placement because the award amount depends upon your location. Or do they review the documents to make sure they have everything they need before granting awards? I don’t see how they could already have done placements, I took the Spanish Test and that was due at noon today. I finished it this weekend so maybe they already have my scores and were able to place me already?

Hello everyone! Welcome in!

I would like to say I’ve came up with a theory about this whole Transitional Funding process. My theory has been semi-proved after todays encounters.

So I received an email saying that I would not be able to view my award information until I submit some additional required documents. Hmmm, I immediately added new documents to my application.

Here’s my theory…I think the way it works is, first you are accepted to the corps then a “list” of accepted applicants are sent to TF staff and they review your documents then create an “awards package” makes sense…I viewed previous threads an not one person documents were reviewed prior to the final interview (if you’ve seen otherwise please share)

My reasoning is why would TFA use the man power to view documents, and create “award packages” for someone who may not be accepted. I also use my experience in this theory. The way financial aid works is, in order for a student to receive an awards package he or she must be accepted into the college/university. They don’t take the time to create aid packages first only to get notification from admissions they didn’t make it in, this would be counterproductive…(this is only my theory)

With this comes the notion that complete and incomplete doesn’t really matter. Incomplete means they’ve received your documents but something is missing or you need additional documents. Complete means they’ve received and viewed your documents and you’re all good to go. So seeing complete means your done, but incomplete merely means your on your way?

Today my stats said under review, shortly after I received an email from TFA staff informing me that I won’t be able to receive my award until I send in those documents. My status still says “Under Review” hmmmm…

Feedback??

@ Teachtoreach I think it probably just says “Under Review” after you submitted the missing document because the TF people need to look at it to determine an award amount and give you a “Complete.” The same thing happened to my boyfriend…I think it’s a good sign.

@elemteacher and @toots99k I sure hope you’re right about the order not mattering for TF status in terms of when the application was submitted and when the interview took place; considering my boyfriend didn’t apply until yesterday and interviewed on the same day I did, with the same regional preferences as me, and they’ve already looked over his documents, I’m feeling pretty convinced at this point that it’s not going to happen for me. Here’s to hoping for the best but expecting the worst.

@explorer17 your bf is in the same situation that I was in. After resubmitting a few documents that’s when they sent me the email saying it was “complete” (documents all VERIFIED) but would remain “UNDER REVIEW.” If your bf has the same thing happen I’m a little bit more hopeful but if his changes to “COMPLETE” then I believe this is a bad sign. Sigh too much variation throughout this whole thing! I did read that a lot of people’s changed from “COMPLETE” > “UNDER REVIEW” so perhaps mine was at one point “COMPLETE” but I just didn’t get a chance to see it. Doubtful… but there’s nothing to go off of here.

@teachtoreach - you’re in the same situation as me!

I do agree w/ your theory on the TFA financial aid devoting resources to candidates that won’t be admitted. Its something I mentioned previously as well because it just doesn’t make sense. Why waste the time? The question now is why my application, yours, and a few others it seems, still remains “UNDER REVIEW.” If they told you that its “COMPLETE” just like me, then perhaps we’re worrying for no reason. It appears others have not had their documents reviewed so this indicates there is a clear difference. Perhaps time will tell. I imagine if there are people here who applied at the same DL, interviewed at the same location, etc. as a few others, and those others had documents changed, then perhaps they’ve already been accepted. You’ve somewhat “controlled” for variations by region, etc.

@Somanybanelings and @teachtoreach, to add to this theory I might say that they review to make sure that they have all necessary documents to make a decision, like this person is capable of making this contribution to their transition, then as they make placements they look at the cost of the region vs. contribution to determine shortfall and an award package. Perhaps those who had their documents reviewed but are still under review have not yet been placed?

@Tinitafish thanks for adding that part. Makes things more interesting and makes me feel more anxious. I will say that according to @toots99k above the “complete” has no bearing on placement. He says those are two separate processes. And I will add that I got that strange email saying it was “COMPLETE” but will show as “UNDER REVIEW.” If someone else got a similar email but had their status change to “COMPLETE” then I’m in trouble. If not, then perhaps things will bode well.

@Somanybanelings: Just a quick update - my boyfriend’s status now changed to complete. I don’t know what to think at this point!

Woo New update!

@explorer17 @somanybanelings After submitting my documents I received an email stating…“until acceptance notification day you will see your status as “Under Review”.”

However not 15 minutes later of receiving the email my status now says “COMPLETE”, I’m confused more now than ever…

@Tinitafish ! very good theory, my now says “COMPLETE”

@somanybanelings check your status again!

@explorer17 - thanks for letting me know. Seems like he’s not the only one to have his status change as well. Hmm so very confusing. Not sure what to think about my situation.

@Teachtoreach - Wow congrats! Fairly certain that you’ll get in by this point so nice job. Any region in particular you want to teach in? As for my status :frowning: I’ve been checking religiously since the 18th when it first changed but its still “UNDER REVIEW.” Maybe it’ll change in a few days. I’ll try to be excited by the fact that my documents are still reviewed and acceptable. Until then, please continue contributing guys so we can get an accurate understanding of how this system works! Gluck to you all.

@somanybanelings thanks for the confidence in my acceptance but with this whole process I’m very unsure what to expect, if I judge by past post that would mean I’m getting in, but I live by the farmer phrase “Don’t count your chickens until they hatch”. So I will continue to wait. I’m also sure that things will work out for you as well, I think you are well on your way! keep posting, stay positive you guys are truly keeping me sane while I wait! :)
