Teach For America 2014 Corps

Hey all, just a heads up, TFANet is indeed only available after you accept your offer. Congrats again to everyone!

Does anyone have any suggestions on good study material for the secondary math content knowledge exam? It’s been more than 10 years since I’ve taken a math class so I know I am going to need to study and refresh my memory on a lot of the concepts in order to pass this test.

If I wanted to change my subject preference and not my region, does anyone know if that option is available? I want to get certified in science but I have ECE.

@TFAHopeful29 I was thinking the same thing. I was pretty excited about being placed in secondary Math since that was one of my top choices, but the praxis for that subject looks crazy. Some of the stuff I remember and some of the stuff looks completely foriegn.

@valways92 I was also assigned to elementary school (pre k- 6). DFW was my first choice so I am thrilled to be moving there!

@Serene1913 Yay! I’m super excited! Alabama was in my highly preferred although secondary science scares me a little bit. It’s been years since I’ve taken a science class. ECE and elementary were my top, but I’m up for the challenge! Do you know what subjects secondary science includes?

I’ve sent an email to TFA about this, but does anyone here know if TF can be used over the summer on rent? I plan on staying at my Institute but I already have an apartment in my region and my lease runs through August, so I still have to pay rent over the summer.

Everywhere says TF is typically used for travel to your region and finding an apartment but it doesn’t say whether it can be used on an apartment over the summer.

This is the only thing keeping me from accepting my offer and it’s driving me crazy! ;)

@paigeorose92 I’m pretty sure the funding is for you to use however you deem fit. I don’t think it’s like an Americorp grant where you are restricted in how you use it. From what I’ve heard, it’s simply a lump sum that you can have deposited in an account of your choosing. The only downside is that you can’t access the funds until the start of Institute so most people might not get it in time to use for their certification exams. Still, TFA offers partial reimbursement for those exams.

@Rolemodel32 Thanks for your response. The only reason I’m worried is that I’ve read you can’t use TF for car payments, and it made me think there might be other limits to TF use as well. Hopefully I’ll get an email back soon to confirm I can use it on rent over the summer. I’ll post here when I find out.

Took a while for me to post this! Got caught up in all of the excitement. Congrats to everyone!

Do any of you guys know how we will qualify to be in Americorps? I was reading that budget cuts have caused TFA to limit the amount of students that can be in Americorps, meaning not all members will qualify for deferred loans or the two year commitment award. Anyone else hear about this or have info?

I was sent an email about the situation. shortly after I got my decision at the second deadline. I can’t remember if it came before or after I accepted the offer though. They said that the organization is waiting to get word back about the status of their Americorps grant but that they are confident all of their new corps members will be qualified. They couldn’t promise anything but they said they’re sure it will work out. I would bring that up when you talk to your regional contact person if you haven’t got any information about that yet. I know this is a serious issue to consider before you accept the offer.

I received an email about it the day after I got my offer (and maybe this is the reading you are referring to?). “We are aggressively pursuing AmeriCorps funds, and we anticipate that most corps members will be able to join AmeriCorps, including corps members without federal loans or significant certification costs.”

The email says that the priority will be Corps members with qualified student loans, then members who must pay significant costs for teaching certification coursework. Last year, 90% of Corps members were AmeriCorps members so I imagine if you meet one of the above standards you will probably qualify for AmeriCorps (although again, this isn’t guaranteed).

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else was accepted to the Kansas City corp or if anyone will be attending the Tulsa institute!!? Super excited to meet all of you :)

Taking the English literature and composition Praxis today, it’s only been 8 years since my last lit class, should be fine, right?

Good luck @tinitafish!
@ktejeda I will be attending Tulsa institute from ENC (unless they change it).

Update: I received an email about my TF and they told me that TF is typically used for move-in costs, exam costs etc. but that I can use my funding for rent during institute if I need to. They just warned me that I may run out of funds if that’s the case (which I’m not too worried about since I will have a little bit saved up myself). :)

Update: I passed! What a huge weight off my shoulders!

Just officially accepted my TFA offer and declined my competing offer. I am beyond excited to be teaching middle/high school math in Baltimore this fall!

Congratulations @Tinitafish! I take the Chemistry Praxis II exam next week, I’m feeling very anxious!
