Teach For America 2014 Corps

I am hoping to stay here in Philly (but really wouldn’t mind moving to any of my highly preferred: Chicago, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, or DC) and to teach English or Generalist. I am pretty flexible with grades. I want to teach High School because I feel like I’d then be making a more direct impact, as this that is the age when big decisions are made regarding their future. But I’ve worked/volunteered a lot with elementary age children, and really feel a pull towards being a voice of stability and reason that many of them don’t have and need. I am also really interested in special education, because they share many of the same disadvantages as other children in their classes, but have even less resources and harder roads ahead of them.

@Tinitafish I would like to teach high school math in Denver, as well!

I’m hoping to teach Elementary or Middle School in a major city on a coast. Or maybe my hometown in the Twin Cities.

My status changed to “Incomplete” today because they saw that one of my documents didn’t quite match the requirements and they asked for different documents in an email. Very weird. I submitted the documents and it changed back to “Under Review.”

In re to @emac’s email, it doesn’t seem to me that that means they’re going to review everyone’s TF application… 500 TF applications is not that many when you consider ~45,000 people applied in total last year. They also can’t really review for “TF” aid when you don’t get in, because you don’t get placed in a region…and your region matters because they’re calculating how close your home ZIP code is to the placement region. Anyway, I’ll post if it changes to “Complete.” Fingers crossed!

I think it’s a pretty great sign that they are obviously looking at your application! That’s good news!

@Disneyguy that sounds like a good sign…at about what time did you notice the change? Any other changes today peeps?

And I agree with you that 500 TF apps isn’t a lot, but not everyone applies for TF, so who knows, especially since the 45,000 people who applied last year account for people who applied for all 5 deadlines and did not necessarily make it to the final round. But I do agree that there is room for interpretation re: emac’s email. It could mean that they are reviewing 500 applications and they are about halfway done with those, but it doesn’t mean that they are looking at all of the TF apps they received. Who knows! I’m just glad to hear that they are only halfway done, meaning that at this point, if we haven’t seen any changes, it doesn’t mean we should count ourselves out because we could be among the second 250 TF applications that haven’t been looked at!

Yeah I was more saying what @explorer17 reiterated. That we can at least relax that if we haven’t seen a change, we might still since they haven’t looked at half of the applications yet. And as explorer said, 45k applicants accounted for people in all 5 deadlines, and people who made it only to the application stage and not to the 2nd or 3rd round. So obviously, the only apps they are looking at are 1DL and 2DL for people who made it through to the final round and also submitted a TF application - it definitely weeds out a lot of people.

As for changes today, I had the same as @disneyguy. They requested an additional document from me, and I changed to incomplete and my one document changed to YES and the other to NO with notes with their requested additional document. My status changed to incomplete. Then, I got an email that they received and approved my additional document and my documents would read YES and N/A even though they were both verified, and my status would remain under review until acceptance day. It is now back to under review.

I don’t think everyone should assume waitlist would be rare for the 1st and 2nd deadline TFA has admitted a chunk of juniors from last year and there are still people who have deferred their acceptance to 2014. We are early but you have to be prepared for anything.

Also I wanted to ask are there any CCC’s or Rising Leader Fellows on the thread? How are you guys feeling? I was offered the CCC position on my campus this week, and I’m debating accepting it since it would be pretty hard to recruit for TFA if I get rejected haha!

Hi all,

Does anyone else notice that the Assignment Preference form unsubmit button keeps reappearing? I know we were suppose to make our choices by 10/20 but I keep going back to every section and sometimes this option is available and sometimes it is not.

Hello everyone!

@tinitafish referenced Art, History, Social Studies, Language Arts, Sciences and Generalist the only subject I would prefer not to teach is Math but I highly doubt anyone would recruit me to teach math. I would be fine teaching Elem-HS. Most of my regional preferences are South-East regions besides Chicago and Las Vegas Valley. It would be nice to get placed near some individuals in the thread :)

Putting total number of applicants aside, lets look at last years total placements of 5100. Assuming that they accept ~1000 for each deadline, and the approaching notification is for two deadlines, we are looking at 2000 total accepted this deadline. 500 TF applications for 2000 admitted seems about right to me.

I feel like there are less people on this thread than in previous years. (Any lurkers come on out!) Anyone else notice that? I’d say there’s actually only maybe 15 of us actively on here.

@emac542 you’re right there aren’t many people on here this year I realized this after canvassing through previous years post. I know for sure there is a high population of watchers haha

I’m sorry for the extreme delay in this! I subscribed so that I can receive notifications on this thread from now on! The junior deadline is still in it’s “pilot” stage and not every college has the opportunity, i don’t think. I applied in March 2013, had a phone interview in April 2013, had my final interview May 3rd and received their offer on May 10th. I have to accept by the first deadline applicants’ timeframe… November 13th, maybe?

I think, generally speaking, the process is much more accelerated for the normal year’s deadlines. I’m not sure on how long the ‘normal’ time to accept/decline is but I imagine it’s a couple weeks.

I submitted my application on the 7th of this month for the 10/25 deadline and just reading all these posts is making me feel so anxious and nervous! I’m seriously praying for at least a phone interview.

Good luck to everyone! :)))

Hello everyone! I applied for TFA during the 1DL and im getting very nervous waiting for next week to come so I can know if I will be teaching in 2014. I enjoyed the interview process and thought it was a very easy process. After the interview I felt even more inspired about education reform; I believe I have already had a drink of the “TFA Kool-Aid” lol. Is anyone else as excited as I am?

Less than 1 week!
I would like to teach Middle or High School Science or Special Education due to my background and current employment experience. I would really like to teach in Philly or stay in NYC.

has anyone checked their assignment preference form? does it still give you the option to unsubmit?

@tfahopeful2014, my assignment preference form had an unsubmit option as of yesterday, but today it’s no longer there. I do wonder if this means anything, but it’s probably just the website being glitchy and I’m not going to read too much into it.

Just a quick update - my transitional funding documents have now been verified, and have “YES, YES and N/A” next to them. However, like Disneyguy and emac542, I am still under review. Crossing fingers…at least SOMETHING is updating on my TF page.

Just to clarify what I meant when I said, “from that e-mail, we know they at least review/process all of the application.” It seems that they at least verify the documents that everyone submits and adjust the TF Status accordingly because it would be a dead giveaway if they just didn’t look at some applicants’ documents. For example, my TF Status reads Under Review: We have not yet reviewed your application or documents. I find it hard to believe they would leave it like this until Notification Day. Thoughts?
