Teach For America 2014 Corps

Hello! I also looked through last years board and was excited to see that there is already one for this year  I applied the 2nd deadline and just had my phone interview today!

When I see these TFA threads, I always wonder if everyone who is applying for the program is aware of the controversy surrounding it. I really don’t mean to start a debate about TFA. I am just curious as to whether applicants generally know there is controversy within education circles. Is it something you think most applicants are aware of?

I am very aware with the controversy surrounding TFA, and hopefully ever other applicant has researched the program enough to be aware of it.

I think that any well-researched applicant would be aware of the controversy surrounding TFA. In fact, my campus recruiter provided me with links to online debates over TFA’s effectiveness and impact. The decision to continue in applying, I would guess (based on myself) has less to do with ignorance over the criticism and more to do with disagreement with those critics.

I’ve also done alot of research on common TFA criticism. Regardless of it, I still want to become a part of Teach for America’s movement because I feel that there needs to be teachers in the classroom who are passionate about ending educational inequity.

I think there needs to be teachers who challenge, support, and understand many of the barriers students in low income communities face. I’ve grown up in low income communities all throughout my life, and most of my teachers I’ve had had low expectations for many students (especially minorities) in the classroom.

Hi everyone!! After doing a lot of online hunting about any applicable information regarding the TFA admissions process, I noticed a pretty long thread from last year and am happy to see one developing for this year!

I applied for the second deadline and moved on to the final interview. I’m really excited to schedule my interview tonight. What regions are people thinking? I am shooting for Colorado, Greater Nashville, or Oklahoma!

Brushing off my old CC account! I just found out that I’m moving on to the final interview as well!

I also just found out that I’m moving on to the final interview!

@townie01: It sounds like we have similar region preferences - All three of those are in my top 10 as of right now.

Awesome! Congratulations! I am filling out the preference form now because I am too excited to wait.

Do you guys know what you’re going to do for your 5-minute lesson? I’ve been thinking about it for the past week or so and can’t seem to pin down a good idea!

I’m very pleased to report that I’ll be doing the final interview as well. I have no idea what I’ll be doing for the five-minute lesson, haha. I’ve been trying to keep my mind off the final interview out of fear that I wouldn’t be invited to do one. I’ll be thinking for the next few days…

Hi everyone! I’m so happy this board exists, I remember following last years TFA board! I was selected for a final interview and I am very excited. I am trying to fill out my assignment preference and the map is not working. Is anyone having a similar problem?

hey everyone! advanced to a final interview today myself. looking at my top 3 preferences…Bay Area, Seattle, NYC. Definitely excited!

not being able to use the assignment preference map is driving me crazy!! Bay Area, Dallas and Miami are my top choices

The map isn’t working for me either, so you are not alone! I thought it was my browser going crazy, but I guess not.

Good to know! I tried in three different browsers and thought I was going crazy!!

I’m finding the Regional COmparison Spreadsheet in Excel to be really helpful.

Me too, it has been extremely helpful! I am just anxious to fill out my assignment preference form!

My map isn’t working either - I was nervous that I submitted it by accident or something. Phew!

Does anyone have information about 2014 Early Acceptance from the 2013 waitlist? Curious if being accepted early helps your chances of landing your top regional preference?

Thanks in advance.

Good luck to everyone. I know how rigorous the interview preparation process is…

The map finally works! Now I just need to take the spanish proficiency exam…apparently they are going to email that to me
