Teach For America 2014 Corps

@Blackneducated: Did you go to school in Raleigh? I went to Middle/High school in Raleigh.

@elemteacher yes I did, I went to Ligon Middle School and then Athens Drive High School

Hey guys! I want to share this blog post about getting through institute…it seems helpful :)

[Teach For America Summer Institute for Dummies: How to survive TFA boot camp | Learning As Leadership](http://learningasleadership.teachforus.org/2011/02/23/teach-for-america-summer-institute-for-dummies-how-to-survive-tfa-boot-camp/)

@Blackneducated: So close! I went to Centennial & then Enloe!

@emac542 – CONGRATS!!!

Coppermoss, We’ll Be At Institute Together! We Should Chat! Woooo Chicago!

@elemteacher really really close! I used to live right down the street from Centennial off of Tryon Road! It’s a small world!

Just found out my subject placement finally (Science 6-12).

I’ve seen a few people talk about requesting reassignment, and I have been through the reassignment process. Teach for America very seldom reassigns corps members, and only in extreme circumstances. You must go through your regional contact to request this, and my advice would be to be very transparent about your concerns.

Congratz to all accepted, and to those who weren’t there are many opportunities out there. City Year is another great program, and there are many other educational programs which aim to close the achievement gap and do very similarly what TFA aims to do.

I think my phone interview went well :)

I can’t discuss the details but I can’t wait until the 14th :)

@stressedgrad8- Glad to hear it. Not half as bad as you probably thought it would be right?

My phone call about the region was really interesting! Apparently regions also have a say in who they want, which I did not know before. So she explained that’s how I got put in Louisiana Delta - they were apparently given my application since I had put South Louisiana, a nearby region, and they really wanted me. She said she didn’t even realize that I hadn’t ranked them. She kept apologizing for it, but I honestly think that LA Delta is a perfect fit for me after speaking with her! Everything happens for a reason  The LA Delta corps is also very small - they’ll only be accepting 25 people this year. And I think I will love that! I’m very excited, and just officially accepted my offer. I hope everyone is also happy with their placement!

Does anyone know how difficult it would be to have your assigned subject changed? I was assigned to teach High School Chemistry and I have very little experience in chemistry (I took 2 college level chemistry classes total). I took the sample Praxis II Chemistry test and I knew maybe 4 out of 20 questions!

I also finished talking with my person from my region. It was basically like, hey, so you are familiar with Oklahoma… Super familiar. I am a teeeensy bit disappointed I’m staying so close to home, but only because I had been dreaming of mountains. We had a talk about what grade level ELL consists of and he says, the one that does it now… Wait what? Only one other person in the region from last year was assigned ELL. That makes me feel strange emotions for sure!

I just accepted my offer as well! I didnt see anyone on here who also was assigned to Greater Nashville?? I am so happy for us all - congratulations everyone!

@TFAHopeful21 How did you preference Chemistry. Did you have it under preferred or least preferred? I know they’re desperate to find STEM people but that’s crazy that they reached that far seeing as how you only took two Chemistry classes! I would bring that up with the person from your assigned region ASAP. Especially because we’re so early into the process, I doubt they’ll screw you and force you to accept that subject if you’re not comfortable. The whole point of the Praxis is to determine whether or not you’re competent enough to teach that subject. So if you let your region point person know, you should be fine!!!

@townie01 I don’t think I saw anyone else. That was my first choice - I’m super jealous of you!

Also, random. But if any of you tweet, you should follow me! @legallymatlin.
I would love to keep in contact with y’all. I’m not a huge FB person, but I do use Twitter a lot.

So it’s more of a collaboration between the placement people and the regional offices? Very interesting. On another note, I think my regional contact forgot to call me.

@Ambitiousme I actually asked my recruiter about no one contacting me yet from Detroit. She said each region has their own way of reaching out to the new applicants. She told me they might wait a couple of days to let it sink in and give me some personal time. I appreciate them thinking about my feelings, but I want to talk to someone now haha! But don’t worry, someone will contact you sometime next week.

@Rolemodel32 Thanks for the info! I’m with you…it would be nice to talk to someone now! There’s a lot of info to take in and tests to plan for, etc.

@elemteacher where were you placed instead??
