Teach For America 2014 Corps

@elemteacher yes, I’ve been going through last year’s thread and noticed the same thing! At least if no one’s status has changed yet we don’t have to be worried that “under review” = denied.

I didn’t apply for TF yet because I knew I would be checking my status obsessively every 10 minutes (even though I keep logging on the applicant center every 30 minutes or so just in case something changes :stuck_out_tongue: )

I’ve been checking TF status like crazy. I’m embarrassed to say that I applied mainly so I could have an early indicator. I managed to get out of school with no loans so I can’t imagine I’ll qualify. I agree that by last year they had already seen changes. so either none of us are getting in, or they aren’t changing.

Today I’m feeling confident that I am not going to be selected… I keep thinking of all the things I should’ve said but didn’t.

@tinitafish I keep flip-flopping between feeling cautiously confident and feeling like I did everything wrong. Little dumb mistakes or omissions keep popping out at me at random times, so I definitely understand how you feel.

@tinitafish @jazzcatastrophe I’m so glad I’m not the only one being obsessive and replaying the interview day over in my head! One minute I’m feeling cautiously confident, and the next minute I’m feeling like there’s no way I’m getting in. It’s driving me crazy! Did anyone’s interviewers ask them very few questions? Or did any interviewers say anything to you indicating you would be getting in (i.e. “WHEN you get accepted, …”)? I know some people last year said this happened.

@tinitafish @jazzcastrophe @DianaDiamond - I am the exact same, it almost switches every hour how I feel about it. I just want it to be October 31 already! 9 days!! Like @jazzcastrophe I purposely didn’t apply for TF after looking at last year’s thread… I thought it would drive me insane…

So, they have had their decisions made since last Friday, huh? I had heard that placements were determined through a massive algorithm (kind of like formal recruitment in sororities, if anyone knows what I’m talking about) so that it was as fair as possible.

I just applied for Teach for America yesterday! So i’ll be finding out if i move onto the next step at the end of the month. i’m kinda nervous because i decided to go ahead and apply at the spare of the moment! But will be reading this thread to pass the time!

I am in the same boat as all of you in terms of replaying the interview day over in my head. Sometimes I feel pretty good about it, but most of the time I’m fairly confident I’m not going to be accepted…in part because I don’t want to get my hopes up so I’m not disappointed, but also because I keep thinking about things I should have mentioned but didn’t think of at the time, things I should have worded better, etc- so I definitely understand how everyone feels.

And @tinitafish I also applied for TF mainly so I could have an early indicator LOL…you’re not the only one!

@DianaDiamond…I had the exact opposite experience with my interviewer in that I got asked tons of questions. Ironically, a lot of people here seem worried about being asked just a few questions and I’m worried that I was asked so many! It probably boils down to each interviewer’s personal style and is nothing to read into, but of course, that doesn’t stop me from doing just that!

Best of luck to you, gar6612! Welcome to the discussion :)

i’ve also filled out an application for alternative certification for the state im wanting to teach in. I actually have a bachelors in elem. ed I just didn’t go through the student teaching or any certification exams…so i’m hoping that either TFA or the actual ACP pulls through to be employed this upcoming school year.

Hello! Welcome @rolemodel32 and @dianadiamond posting here definitely helps me, although I’m busy these days and I find little time to think about it.

@Dianadiamond in reference to your interview, I experienced the the same situation. My inter view was very brief maybe 19 mins (20max). I was asked two questions, followed be questions about my preferences. The interview ended with “Where ever you go, I’m sure you’ll do well” the interviewer did too mention that she had no baring on placement but she did decide if I was in or out. I think about the interview but I don’t over analyze it. Like a fellow poster wrote it all may be determined by the interviewer interviewing style.

@almostpostgrad wow a heated conversation, unfortunately race related conversations can bring about situations. However, individuals must to understand composure and professionalism. Instead of individuals becoming heated or bothered by such conversations, they need to show their passion to change it. This is another thing my interviewer mentioned “composure” and the ability to handle stressful situations after completing the role-play. I think everyone in my group was pretty vocal however they were a few who just “piggie-backed” off others the entire time. I referenced the articles during the discussion and one girl was at a blank as if it was new to her. I sat close to the interviewer(not intentionally) during this portion, and literally they were typing the entire time, but it seems as if she was only typing single words, words maybe? I don’t know, there goes me over thinking it.

All in all, besides the waiting this has been an overall pleasant experience for me. I’m preparing myself for an entrance or denial into the program. But either way I know I will still work towards improving education. Knowing that my intentions are genuine I applied with the understanding that I can work towards improving education without being accepted into the corps. However I also understand that the corps would give me a larger platform and a wonderful opportunity to meet and serve students that I may not have an opportunity to serve without the corps.

So I say everyone stay positive, keep posting and the 31st will be here before you know!

@townie01: I love the comparison. It definitely makes sense!

@DianaDiamond: I thought it was funny you posted that, because I was JUST talking to my coworkers about how I kinda felt like I got bid promised (more sorority comparisons here). My interviewer made a comment about how I would fit into the corps and then when I asked her questions about the transition, she kept saying “When you go to institute…” or things like that. It made me feel so confident I would get it after the interview, but I’m reminding myself that it’s not a definite.

Hey guys glad to know you guys did well and I’m hoping for the best for us all. A few points beginning with my status and later my interview.

1) STATUS OF TRANSITIONAL FUNDING - I gathered from the forums regarding TFA Corps 2013 on CC that a status change to “complete” was a positive and almost indicative of acceptance into the program. There wasn’t enough data showing “‘completed’ > rejected” so perhaps this figure does exist, but from the available self-identifications, “‘completed’ > accepted” more than 90% of the time.

With that said, I was wondering if any of you noticed changes in A) “TRANSITIONAL FUNDING APPLICATION STATUS” and B) “DOCUMENTS VERIFIED.” I separated these two because I had most of my documents verified before receiving an email asking for clarification. I re-sent some additional information, all my documents are now VERIFIED but status remains UNDER REVIEW, and the TFA finance staffers said, “Your status will remain ‘Under Review’ until your notification date (10/31) and that is when you will also find out about your offer – should you be admitted to TFA.” Oh and I submitted my Transitional Funding application quite late and close to the deadline. I was surprised they looked through my information so quickly to be honest.

Question - Do some of you see 1) “Documents Verified / Under Review” or 2) “Documents Verified / Complete” or 3) “Documents Un-Verified / Under Review” ??? I noticed another thread where TFA staffers acknowledged this “change in status” giving away admissions info was a problem, so I’m not sure if they changed the policy for TFA 2014. On the other hand, I’m not sure if the other people from TFA2013 and TFA2012 were reporting “Documents Verified / Under Review” as well when stating that their “status was not changed to completed.” A lot of variations and I’m not sure what to believe… If there is “Documents Verified / Completed” then I think I have a lot to worry about. If not, perhaps I’ll get lucky. I do wonder though why they would ask for clarification if I wasn’t even going to be admitted. My guess would be that they would want to streamline the process and throw away all applications and transitional funding requests for rejected applicants. Perhaps them asking for clarification is good news? Any thoughts?

–

2) INTERVIEW - Had my interview on 10/17. Everything went smoothly and everyone finished w/in 5 minutes. 10 People - 2 Groups for the discussion and everyone did well. For my final interview, I was quite surprised that they didn’t ask about my extracurricular but was told the phone interview and materials submitted already described all they needed to know. Perhaps a good thing? Perhaps a bad thing, I really don’t know. Some of you guys discussed your passion when they asked if you wanted to include anything else. I didn’t and am still regretting it to this day! Situational Role-Play was also pretty simple but perhaps because I had a nice interviewer. Reading thorugh some of the TFA 2013/2012 comments it seems like some interviewers were incredibly rude and difficult. Not mine. I think focusing on some basic interview principles are enough to do well on the phone/live interview.

Anyways that’s all for now. Hope this helps!

@somanybanelings, My transitional funding status now says Complete. Under documents verified by transitional funding it now says YES. That is definitely a change for me. I have avoided logging in since yesterday evening, so it happened sometime today for me.

I am trying so hard not to get excited about this. As I said earlier today, I have convinced myself that I will not be getting in. Please everyone begin to tell me that you all are also seeing complete transitional funding. As I mentioned previously, I’m sure it was easy to review everything. I’m 26 have been graduated since 2009 work full time and have no student loans, so I needed almost no documentation. I’m sure I don’t qualify for transitional funding.

It’s funny how we all had different experiences with the actual interview part. I was so confused about the conversational way it went. At one point, we were talking about basketball! I just talked to a recruit manager who was giving me some tips, and he told me that the interviewers try to make it as calm a space as possible. Everyone has a personal style, but he said they do try to make the applicants feel as comfortable as possible. And I can imagine him doing that because he is such a funny and outgoing guy. He can’t contain his humor so we were laughing about what it would be like if I had to interview with him.

Ahh that’s making me nervous. Mine has not changed today. I applied on the 12th and had my interview on the 16th. :/

He also told me that the interviewers do have a big say i who gets chosen and who does not. They are allowed to “fight” for who they want if the scores don’t support your admission. So I think that benefits us all since it sounds like we were all able to make a personal connection or at least get the interviewer to understand our motivations!

Also on the TF, I absolutely NEED the funding but I knew I would not be able to handle the suspense. I would have been on the news as the 23 year old who suffered a heart attack. I was browsing last year’s thread and there was so much drama about the TF. It sounds like TFA has addressed the problem this year, but I can’t take the chance haha!

@elemteacher, I wouldn’t worry too much if it hasn’t changed. Like I said, mine was very easy to review. I turned mine in on the 7th and interviewed the 14th

@elemteacher my TF status did not change today either! I do think complete/documents being verified is a positive sign for all of those who are seeing those changes but obviously nothing is a sure thing. As for those of us who are still “Under Review,” let’s not despair yet…it’s still early! I also submitted some of my documents a day late so I’m hoping that’s why the TF people haven’t gotten to it yet, but who knows.

@Tinitafish thank you for letting me know. I’m guessing then that as soon as the documents said YES your status was changed to COMPLETE. Sigh this makes me worry… I think that’s a good sign for you though so great job!
