Teach For America: Waiting List

After reading through this, i am curious as to whether or not the phoenix waitlist is the higher priority waitlist, while the recommended for acceptance letter is the general waitlist. I’m thinking this because they have said that the waitlist is ranked, correct??

I have absolutely no idea. However, here are some responses I received from admissions concerning three simple questions…

"…I was waitlisted for the final application deadline and had a few questions…

1.) Will you be notifiying applicants of their status on a rolling basis or will we all hear back on May 21st?

2.) Is the intention to find everyone a placement who is on the waitlist?

3.) Is the waitlist ranked by some sort of interview/application score?

(THE REPLY) Thank you for contacting Teach For America. In response to your first question, while it is possible that you could receive your final admissions decision before May 21, it is unlikely.

Please note that it is our policy to not share any information about how our waitlist is structured, nor can we comment on your chances of acceptance. Thus, I do not have direct answers to your second and third questions. We recognize the uncertainty of your position and appreciate your patience and consideration.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any additional questions.

IMHO I think the two waitlists exist because there is possible opportunity to place a relatively large number of waitlisted corps members in Phoenix compared to all of the rest of the regions combined. I feel like if you put Phoenix on your “highly preferred” or maybe even “preferred” list, you got on the Phoenix waitlist, and if you ranked it “least preferred” (possibly on the “preferred”), then you got placed on the general waitlist.

As for the ranking of waitlists (assuming that TFA wants to remain consistent in the information they divulge to waitlisters) according to their response above there is no way to be sure.

24 days and counting…

Hello Everyone:

I have been following this thread since I heard about a waitlist back in February. I was waitlisted on March 8th. I received the “recommended for acceptance” letter that has been posted on this thread (the survey was also the same). On April 19th I was accepted into the Detroit Corps. I am writing to tell you all to hang in there. I know it can be tough and it is so easy to speculate because no one will give you answers. I believe that the acceptance at this point is rolling.

I believe that I read an article that said only 80% accepted last year that means that 20% will likely decline and people will get pulled from the waitlist.

Good luck to you all!!! I know it sucks to have to wait but remain hopeful.

Has anyone else heard back regarding a placement? I’m getting concerned that I still have yet to receive any follow-up from TFA regarding the situation. It’s frustrating that they sent me the one waitlist e-mail, but have not contacted me since.

Hey I apply to TFA during the first application period. I was waitlisted then, and each month after. Its seems to be a long and tedious process. I am hoping to hear some good new soon, but the longer I wait the less hopeful I get.

Has anyone heard new information/been extended an offer by TFA **AFTER **April 30th? [which was the acceptance deadline for those that got accepted]

I’m really curious to see if they’ve started offering positions after knowing how many people have declined their offer…any information is helpful! This is the only ongoing forum I’ve found concerning people on the wait list. The anxiety is killing me!

I have also been wait listed in the forth deadline. I want to stay positive but I feel that maybe I should of applied earlier. I’ve also been paying attention to the TFA facebook page, where some people go on and say they were accepted. It seems that a lot of people were taken off the wait list and accepted in Detroit April 30th. I hope it is not just the Phoenix Corps waitlisters who have the only chance of getting in. Good luck to them though and hope that piece of legislation passes.

I know someone who was waitlisted for several months and then recently accepted (april 30th).

I just got accepted into TFA today for Eastern North Carolina! After being so dejected about being on the wait list, I finally got off of it! Hang in there to those who are still waiting.

Hope against all hope!

I’m so glad there are others out there on the waiting list! I know one girl from my school, who was in my interview and also waitlisted, but I feel like I know so little. My friends keep asking, “what do you think the chances are?” but I couldn’t have less of a clue. It seems all out of my hands now.

It’s good to know they’ve started to accept people. Accepted people, any tips? Did you contact anyone, or change your preferences? Were you placed in special Ed. or early education?

I want to find out anything I can!

Hey NJ,

I was just curious as to where Eastern North Carolina was on your list of choices. Also, what round did you apply?

Hey bj,

I applied 4th cycle, which made me nervous about getting placement because the wait list had started since first round interviews so people have been on the wait list prior to me. So when I got wait listed April, I thought hard about what was more important to me- placement or being part of the movement. Ultimately, I emailed admissions and asked them to change my regional preference to “any region with the highest need” in hopes of getting a better shot at being taken off the wait list. I don’t know if that had any bearing on my placement though…
Initially, I ranked all east coast regions [NC among them] as my “preferred” regions, while DC, CT, Mid Atlantic, &Miami were my “Most Preferred” regions.

&to answer Roaring’s question, I wasn’t placed in Special Ed or Early Education. I’m going to be teaching middle school science. =]

Hello all!

It’s so hard to sit still and wait, so I called a regional office, SD, my first choice, to talk about available teaching assignments, etc. I had already sent them an email about my ties to the region. On the phone, the woman was amazing, she’s not actually doing admissions, and admissions is really centralized, she doesn’t have a say, but she was able to give me some good information. She said, among other things,

“It’s not like we have the waitlisted candidates ranked, it’s not about some being less qualified than others, it’s more about availability, and who’s able to teach what where. Also, at this point in the game, it’s about the big picture. So, for example, even if you are qualified to teach where you want, and it’s available, but your major, or some other qualification like that, qualifies you to teach where it’s harder to get people qualified, something special, they’ll most likely put you there, so they can place more people. It’s all about the certification agreements in each state.”

She also said she’ll be determining TODAY how many more her region can take. She said there should be another wave of acceptance as the regions begin to do this. From this blog, it sounds like Detroit is already doing this.

She was really nice and hopeful, although more hopeful about getting placed than getting placed where I wanted in SD.

I also changed my preferences, as soon as I was waitlisted to “place where needed” but some of my original high preferences were some of the highest need areas like the Delta, S. Louisiana, New ORleans, and Rio Grande Valley.

I wonder if the oil spill will affect any of those areas.

Wow, some great info Roaring. Thanks for sharing!

I was in the fourth round of applicants this year, and was put on the wait list. Unfortunately I am unable to accept other assignments in other regions as I have a wife and children. I wish I could though, as the T.F.A. mission is really crucial, and enacted tremendously well. I was curious if anyone from the 4th round had been accepted in the Boston region, or taken off the waitlist. I am dying to hear. Hopefully good news. Good luck to all.

So, the nice thing about the waitlist is that there is no holding-your-breath as you open your email, no this-is-it, all-or-nothing. I was just checking my email and there it was!

WAITLIST UPDATE

I am writing to follow up with an update on your waitlist status and final admissions decision, as well as to thank you for your patience and giving us the opportunity to work with our district partners to find you a placement.

I am pleased to extend you an offer to join the Teach For America 2010 corps! This offer to join Teach For America reflects your outstanding accomplishments, leadership potential, and commitment to expanding educational opportunities for children in low-income communities. In order to secure your place in the 2010 corps, you must complete matriculation forms on the Applicant Center on or before Friday, May 14 at 5:00 p.m. ET. Please be advised that this date differs from the April 30 deadline that is displayed on your status page. You will have one week from today to decide to join the corps in order to provide you enough time to prepare for your transition.

BUT THEN,
WHEN I GO TO THE APPLICANT CENTER:

Because of unusually high server traffic, we cannot process your request at this time. We apologize for the inconvenience we know this causes. Please wait one minute, then hit the Back button on your browser and try again.

TFA’s server has been down all day, so I cannot find out anything about where I would be placed and what I’d be teaching. Oh no! 1/7th of my week to decide has elapsed!

Whoa. But some good news. Maybe the server is down because they found us all placements, and we’re all trying to look at the same time!!!

Whoa!

Congrats Roaring!! =D

I’m really glad more people are being accepted off the wait list! Be sure to update us of your region. I hope these wave of acceptances give people more hope.

I take it to mean that a wave of new acceptances just went out, similar to Roaring’s email, which would explain the site being down.

I didn’t get an email, so I guess I’m still waiting. Ha.

Congrats, Roaring.

They said the site would be down for a little while due to maintenance. I it was for the weekend.

Congrats everyone who has gotten off the waitlist.

Keep hope alive, for those of us still waiting!

Hey Roaring,

Now that TFA’s website is back up, I was wondering if you had an update on your placement and etc?

Hey again all!

The site is up and running again and I am running away to…

SOUTH DAKOTA! To teach secondary mathematics! (I’m an English/Creative Writing/Art major)

I’m really surprised as SD was my first choice. I’m wondering if it had anything to do with the email I sent to the regional office and then the follow up phone call. The woman said she didn’t have any control over where people were placed, and SD was unlikely, but it was like 4 days afterwards so…

perhaps? (I wrote about my relationship with the region and why I feel so drawn to serve there, especially. Could also be that SD is not super-requested.)

Good luck to everyone on the waitlist, I’m feeling hopeful for all of us!
