Teacher Evaluation Letters

I know the ND website asks for one Teacher Evaluation in addition to the counselor letter. I was wondering if the board of admissions would be frustrated if I sent two teacher evaluations (one from math/science, one from social sciences/english). I already gave the envelopes to each of my teachers but I suppose I could ask for the one back. I dont suppose this is too big of a deal but you can never be too careful. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

If I were you, I’d follow directions.

I would also follow the directions. It is specifically stated on the application to only send in one teacher evaluation - all others will be disregarded.

alright thanks for the input. Both of the letters were probably sent already but I’ll check to make sure. The second one sent will probably be disregarded and the first letter was the better of the two anyway so it will all work out just fine.

I disagree; I sent in two when I applied. While only one will be the official “teacher eval” the other will be read as well. At absolute worst it will be disregarded, and it will certainly not have a negative effect on your app

thanks, thats great to hear. The second letter is probably in the mail already. Just curious BPKO43, were you admitted? or are you applying this year?

From last year’s application -

“Letters from other persons slow the evaluation process and do not strengthen your application.”

BPKO43 - Unless you have some inside information as to who read your application, you should not assume that the second evaluation was read. And I will not assume that it wasn’t. Imagine if every single applicant sent in at least 2 teacher evaluations…

CYCLONEMAN34 - I wouldn’t worry about sending in the two evaluations but I would advise you to follow directions in the future.

I heard from an admissions officer that it annoys the hell out of the board, and can have a negative impact. It also shows that you can’t follow basic directions.

I’m realizing that its useless to argue because whats done is done now. I did everything else correctly :).

I was admitted early action and am attending right now. And to the naysayers, it has been said verbatim by multiple admissions reps that “We will read everything you send us.” The reason they say that is to discourage the (slightly insane)kids who send in 5 teacher recs, employer recs, church pastor, family friend, troop leader, etc. They tell a story of a kid who sent in some 40 recs, and that is the type of thing they want to avoid, and thus why they do not necessarily encourage additional recs. They will, however, understand the worries of someone who feels that having one’s sole recommendation come from a math/science teacher will not provide the full picture that could be obtained given an additional rec from a social sciences teacher, and vice versa. Why? Because a substantial portion of applicants to high-caliber schools such as ND do fret about those things.

Don’t worry about it for a minute; it would be a waste of your time.

BPKO43 -

So you are an expert on all of this because you were admitted early action?? The rest of us are not “naysayers” - we just happen to be considerate enough to follow the directions that are printed on the application.

In reading your original post, why do you want to send 2 letters? Could one of the teachers be stronger than the other in terms of evaluating you? When son applied, he carefully asked the teacher that he thought knew him best in terms of being a student (work ethic, grades, etc) as well as how well that teacher could convey to admissions the rec that son needed. If both of the teachers you have asked are going to say about the same thing, then why send in two letters? If however, one of those teachers may provide a slight edge or insight as to your qualifications/fit at ND, then I would want that one teacher to send the evaluation. Of course, your counselor will be submitting per ND requirement and can hopefully offer a different perspective of you as a student. I do not know anyone in admissions, but as others have stated, son tried to follow the directions when submitting his app. And as I have stated many times before, I honestly believe that ND will evaluate you based on the whole application–not just 1 teacher rec. Make sure your app is up to snuff with great grades, a well-written essay, good ECs and scores. You will be fine. Good Luck!

Heycow, if you actually read the full thread before saying whatever foolish thing is at the top of your head, you would notice that he asked me about my being admitted/applying, so I answered. And great insinuation that I’m inconsiderate when I’m trying to assure the man that he’s not going to have his application thrown away just because he didn’t “follow directions.” I was told BY A REP when I called before completing my app to ask if a 2nd eval was okay that it was more than okay and it would be read, not “disregarded” as you claim.
It may not be the best thing in the world to do, but there are certainly cases of applicants who would benefit from the fuller perspective that 2 evals would provide, as the two teachers may know them in 2 very different contexts.

Alright thanks everybody for your ideas, but I stopped the second letter so that only one will be received by ND. The reason I was going to send the second letter was to shed light on aspects that a math/science teacher would not necessarilly see - like writing ability. I’m looking forward to hearing that decision in December!

BPKO43 -

I would suggest that you should read all of the posts thoroughly before you reply.

I stated in my post that you shouldn’t assume that the second letter would be read as I wouldn’t assume that it wasn’t. I also told the OP not to worry about his situation - Which part of that did you not understand?? Or am I just being “foolish?”

My son just followed the printed directions on the application - no need to get defensive because you chose not to when you applied.

Enjoy your Fall Break.

“I would also follow the directions. It is specifically stated on the application to only send in one teacher evaluation - all others will be disregarded.”

I did read the posts thoroughly. You must have forgotten what you yourself wrote. The End.

Sorry that I am late to the party, but I agree, you did the right thing by not sending the letter. This is one of the things I too had heard admissions hated when I was there, and I doubt much has changed in the last two years. Yes, people may have gotten in having done this, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t frowned upon.

I feel like there’s such animosity in this thread… but I’m glad that it worked out for you, cycloneman!

I’m glad that we all love eachother
