I've heard that top tier universities only want evalations from teachers of core subjects. Is this true? I'm applying to ivies and top tier schools, and I know my music and French teachers would give me the best evaluations. These are also the only teachers I've had for repeat years, so they know me much better than a science or math teacher I only had for one year.
Will they look down upon my choice of teachers?

bump........

Sometimes the application will say that one recommendation from an English teacher and/or a Math teacher is required, for example.

What about my health classes (medical magnet school). I think she would write the best one. :-D

glucose-
It depends on what kind of school you're applying to

French is ok. Music is probably not. I don't know about health.

If it makes you feel any better, I haven't had any teacher for more than one year. A year is long enough to get to know a student, and is all that the colleges really expect.

How about Yearbook?

I've heard of people giving evaluations from people who weren't teachers.........like a community eader if hhe person has organized a lot of charitable community events or something...

out of curiosity, why do you think a Music teacher would be inappropriate?

Yeah, I'd like to know to......a big prt of my app is music, I sat 1st chair in all-state and stuff. Would it be appropriate then?

I don't know. Schools usually don't consider music to be "academic." You could send in a letter from a music teacher as a supplementary rec. This really only applies to very selective schools, though, so it depends where you want to go.

Yeah I'm looking at very selective schools, though. I'm still not sure if you're completely right on that aspect. A math teacher won't know you very well, but a music teacher who's had you for 2 classes a day since freshman year (plus many, many outside activities like marching/pep band and summer events) would have the most knowledge about what kind of person you are. It usually asks the teacher to list the classes in which (s)he has had the student.

French is a core academic class, therfore, a French rec is fine.

Music is... well, not. I would suggest sending music as a third (supplimental) rec and ask another teacher to do the second required one.
