Teacher for Calc 1

Hey everyone,

I'm looking through the online course guide and I only see one named instructor, J. Halpern, for Calc 1. Who are the other Calc 1 teachers?

Thanks

Halpern teaches the CSP sections of MATH 115. I believe that most calc I courses are taught by staff members (profs, gsi’s, lecturers) but I could be wrong.

rockbiter, you are right.

alextie, the important thing to remember about Calc at Michigan (unless you’re part of the 5% of kids who can naturally do well on calc exams) is that it’s GOING TO BE HARD.

Got a 5 on AP calc? doesn’t matter. Michigan calc is notoriously hard. My advice is to do all the webwork ahead of time and visit the math help room every day (that’s overkill, but it’s what i had to do). go to office hours. if you don’t get something, stay after. that’s the key!

I ended up with a 66% in Calc 2 and an A-!

O_o

So when signing up for classes, any time it says “Staff” it means that a GSI teach’s it?

Generally, yes.

However, “staff” certainly doesn’t mean “incompetent.”

My Calc 1 instructor was a post-doc (technically, he’s a professor, though he only taught 1 section of basic math-- otherwise, he just does research); he was an amazing instructor.

Most will be GSIs. Don’t worry, they’re more than qualified to teach you the material, and for the most part, they do a great job.

As an aside, for some classes, it may give the instructor’s name-- that doesn’t ensure that they’re a professor. There are several types:

one nice thing with classes like calc is that if you don’t like your prof you can easily sit in on another section
