Teacher is An Alumni of This College?

So one of the teachers writing my recommendation went to CMC, which is one of the schools I'm applying to.

When she writes it, does the school know that she graduated from there? I had heard from friends and my high school counselor that having her as a recommend-er will at least cause them to spend a little more time on my application, but unsure of whether this is true.

The teacher may bring it up independently, but I’m fairly certain the school’s admissions office won’t have time to check the background of each teacher who submits a rec. Who knows, though? A lot of schools have policies independent of what I’d see as intuitive, and a lot don’t.

I used a teacher who went to Pace for my Pace rec. It asks how familiar the teacher is with Pace on the rec. I don’t know how it works with other schools’ recs though.

I was referring more to a general recommendation to a school (i.e., if you want to tailor one to the Common App requirement but still have a letter customized for the school). If you’re looking at specific programs it really depends on the school, and I don’t exactly know how you’d extract the information without sounding exploitative of the current “system.”

CMC won’t know that she’s an alumna (the word alumni is both plural and masculine) unless she mentions it.

On the other hand, when I have written recommendations for students applying to my alma mater, I have made a point of mentioning that I am an alumnus, so that admissions officers will know I am as well acquainted with the college as I am with the applicant.

Skeezey - this is for my CommonApp, which includes 3/5 of the Claremont schools and a few non-Claremont schools

Rachel - That’s interesting, I suppose it does differ from school to school.

Sikorsky - oops! I knew I was using it wrong, but wasn’t sure how to fix it. When you wrote letters for students using CommonApp, it was just a general recommendation, right? But for specific schools, you mentioned your attendance there?

Anyway, CMC is one of my top choices, but Scripps is my #1. Does it make a difference? And thanks a lot, to everyone that replied :)

on the cmc supplement, under “what influenced you the most to apply to cmc” you can write that you’ve talked to your teacher (insert name) who is an alum of cmc… :p

also. Come to Claremont and the 5Cs! :)

Timetobegin, that’s exactly what I did.

I think it would be best to tell your teacher to mention that in her letter of rec. I have heard that some teachers say something along the lines of “as an alum of [Redacted] University, I know that [redacted] would benefit from your universities resources…”

She knows I’m applying there and greatly encouraged me to, so I’m sure I don’t need to ask her to mention that.

The thing is, I’m applying to various other privates and using CommonApp, so it’s the same recommendation for each school. I’m not sure if it’d be a good or bad thing to have her mention her alum status because maybe it should be a general recommendation, fit for all schools.

Give her a little credit. I am sure she can find a way to mention her own tie to one college without wrecking your letter to all the rest.

I would simply write your letter, then modify it for CMC, and send them the modified version by fax, email or snail mail.
