I have 5 recommendations, including the counselor. Will it be too much if I submit all 5? Or do I have to pick and choose the best ones and pick 1 or 2?

1 or 2 ......

Mika08, in addition to the counselor, choose 2 recommendations. That will be acceptable, and it will be sufficient.

If all 5 are simply saying "This kid is really smart, I think he'd do well in your program" then one or two. But if each recommendation brings into light a different aspect of yourself, then it may be acceptable. For example, I'm submitting a rec from my AP biology teacher, my AP US history teacher, my research professor (I worked in a biochemistry graduate lab for two summers), and my yearbook teacher (I'm yearbook editor this year). I was wondering if it'd be excessive (actually, I could probably swap my AP history teacher with the yearbook teacher) but other than that, I do need at least three recommendations due to the different information that each one would contribute to my application.

at the emory session, the lady mentioned that they had a kid send 19 one year and they all said the same thing, but it was very unnecessary and kind of irritated the selections committee. 5 does seem a bit much, but don't feel limited by exactly one or two.

5 is slightly ridiculous. besides counselor, choose 3 other teachers max.

Emory says up to two optional recommendations. I have emailed them and the admissions lady replied, "If you want to send teacher recommendations you can use the Common Application forms and yes, we do ask that you limit them to two."

So I would keep it at two.

Oops. haha well the optional ones have already been sent and the required ones I can't take out. so I've got two teacher recs and a university professor rec for the school, plus guidance counselor rec and I've got one rec for the scholars app. ahhhhh well if they hate me, they hate me.
