Hello
I have a teacher who is an Amherst alumni, but she is not in my major area…she’s an English teacher and I want to major in Chemistry. I was wondering that if the fact that she is from Amherst give me a boost in admissions, or is it irrelevant? I could easily get a math rec

thanks :)

Getting rec’s from both an english/humanities subject as well as a science would probably give you a boost, so I’d say it’s a great idea to ask the alum!

An Amherst alum will hold some weight, but more importantly, does she know you? A personalized recommendation will go much further. Admissions will be looking to see if the teacher knows you well, or you just chose her for her alumnae status.
