French Teacher - definitely likes me, can write good rec
History Teacher - likes me but not as much as my french teacher, can write VERY GOOD recs
Math Teacher - sort of likes me, his recs aren’t that strong though

I’m applying to:
MIT
Caltech
Stanford
Princeton
Columbia

These are my questions:

I plan on doing engineering. Will it be better for me if I get one from my math teacher even though my french/history teachers writes much better recs and likes me more? This question is designed for Stanford and Princeton, which don’t require a math/science teacher of rec.

MIT, Caltech, Columbia wants a rec from a math teacher. But should I get my second rec from my french teacher or history teacher? My counselor specifically told me my history teacher writes “awesome” recs but on a scale of 1-10 (10 being likes me alot) I would stand at a 8 for the history teacher and 10 for the french teacher.

1st question: most colleges will understand that math teachers aren’t always the best people to ask for recs (typically language or history teachers are best). Don’t bother submitting a mediocre one from your math teacher just because you want to major in engineering, esp. if they don’t require one.

2nd: I’d suggest to have your history teacher do the rec, although your French teacher likes you better, because french is not a core subject and typically not as difficult as a history class (a history teacher can be more testament to your academic abilities, esp if your history teacher has potential to write you a great one). Do you necessarily have to choose? You can submit both, if you think it’ll help.

Yeah for the 2nd question, I have to choose one of them since MIT/Caltech/Columbia requires a math teacher to write one of the recs, leaving room for only one more teacher.
