Teacher Recommendation Maximum/Minimum Quantity

Are the “allowed” recommendations the maximum or are they considered as additional to the required amount?

If it says 2 required, 3 allowed, then it’s the required plus one.

As a general rule, more is not better. For almost all applicants, if the college accepts additional recs, one over the required is sufficient, and even then, only if the additional rec gives info not covered in the other recs.

In addition to what @skieurope said, in some cases an extra letter can even hurt. Have you heard the term “damn with faint praise”? If 2 out of 2 recs are positive but not that strong, 3 of 3 like that is worse, not better. It will raise the question “Couldn’t the applicant find anyone to write a strong letter?”

Quality is much more important than quantity in this case.

agree 100% here, if you are going ask for an additional letter of Rec it needs to provide a different perspective over what others are all ready providing. Someone like a Performing Arts Teacher or maybe the Moderator of a club that you have gone above and beyond…
