Teacher Recommendation Question :)

Dear Parents,
My junior is asking a teacher who will be moving to write a recommendation for next year before the end of this year.Besides a handwritten thank-you what would be an appropriate personal gift? The teacher is a young single female who's down to earth. She has also been my daughter's advisor all through high school.I'm thinking $25 price range or so.TIA!
Grateful for your ideas,

I saw a thread on this. I think it was in the High School forum. You might want to search.

A handwritten thank-you that includes specifics about what your D appreciated about the teacher’s teaching and mentoring is the best thank-you that teachers can get. If the D is able to contact the teacher after your D knows where she’ll be going to college, it would be good if the D lets the teacher know, and expresses appreciation again for the teacher’s help.

You might consider a gift card for Starbucks, Borders, Barnes & Noble or even a Visa gift card.

I really do not think a gift is appropriate for a recommendation, but a thank you note would be. And if you really like the person, stay in touch and let them know what you are doing. That is worth more than any gift.

I think the handwritten note is expected, deserved, and enough.

I’ve written recommendations for students, and I don’t think gift cards are appropriate either. I have never felt the need to be “paid” in material goods for writing a recommendation. The only payment I want is a handwritten thank-you and the student’s taking the time to let me know if they got the opportunity that I recommended them for.

Normally, I would say that a nice note is sufficient, but in this case, considering that the woman has been her advisor AND she is moving out of town, a gift card to a major book store or on-line store would be a very kind thought. Teachers never have enough money or supplies and always end up buying things for school out of their own pocket (and this is coming from a former teacher!). You don’t have to tie the gift card to the thank you note, it would be better if you don’t- send or give the card to say “good by” and “thank you for all you’ve done”.
