I’m applying to Brown ED this year and was wondering if the 2 letters of recommendation had to come from teachers of DIFFERENT subjects. I’ve already asked 2 English teachers for recs, which they have almost completed (so I can’t really ask them not to send the letters off). 1 is my English teacher from 11th grade, who got to know me really well and has told me that she is really excited to write me a “glowing” rec; the other is from my 9th grade English teacher, whom I have again for my senior year (she is also the coach of the 3-person UIL Literary Criticism team that I have been on for the past 3 years). I know they will both write me great recs, and I plan to focus on English anyway if I get accepted (hopefully!). I am also an NCTE Achievement Awards in Writing recipient, and the Lit Crit team has reached state level 3 years in a row, so my app would be very English-leaning.

What do you guys think? Should I get another teacher to write me a rec? My top alternatives would be my Latin teacher or French teacher.

You do usually want to ask two teachers in different subjects, but Brown will accept more teacher recs than they require. If you go to Common App., then go to Brown page, then click on school forms and there is a section at bottom to click on details. That will give you the amount of teacher recs that you can actually have submitted. Often applicants will only submit what’s required, but last year Brown accepted up to 4 teacher recs via Common App. In this case, since the teacher has likely already written your rec, I would ask one more teacher to write you a rec. No need to send 4, but no harm in sending 3 if they still accept up to 4. Not sure what your intended major is, but if you are intending to apply for a BS degree, you will need a rec from a science teacher. Your latin or french teachers may be a good if BA applicant. Whomever is likely to give you the stronger rec.

Thanks for your reply! I am intending on majoring in English. Does the counselor rec count towards the 4? Science and math aren’t exactly my strong points; no teacher truly comes to mind when I look back on my years in those subjects.

Last year, I was under the impression that the counselor rec does count towards the 4 maximum, but I could be wrong. Since you’re planning on concentrating in English, a STEM rec isn’t needed. I’d get the Latin/French teacher to write you a nice rec if you could, but regardless, I’d say you’re set.
