Do teachers I choose to write me recommendations need to write a separate recommendation for each institution I apply to using the common app? I just sent invited to a few teachers for one college using common app, but when I send them invites to fill out the letter of recommendations for other schools also using the common app, will they have to start fresh?

Gosh, I never thought about that. Now I’m confused, too.

The online process for teachers and counselors is one-and-done. They submit one version, and it goes to all colleges to which you have assigned them.

(This info does not apply to Naviance schools.)

Yes at teacher submits one letter of recommendation to the Common App site after you have given Common App their email addresses. As you submit your application to a specific college, you get to choose which teacher recs to use. You can have three different recs from teachers and send a different one to each college or any other variation depending on what the school wants.

Our school appears to be using the Naviance edocs feature. How do recs work then? It keeps saying that we have to contact our school about the Naviance account.

If your school uses naviance, then the teachers submit the common app reference through naviance. You use naviance to send them a request to give a reference (although you should talk to them first), and then the teacher uses naviance to write and submit the reference. Finally, the guidance office submits the reference and any other supporting materials to the school.

In naviance, the teacher can choose to write one reference for all the schools, or write personalized ones.
