I'm trying to decide between 2 of 3 teachers for the two "official" letters of recommendation for the common app. What I'm wondering is if it is possible to ask all three of them, see which 2 write the best letters, and then choose the "official" letters I send in.

I hope that question doesn't sound too stupid. I'm really confused about how the whole process works.

As long as you don't tick that "I waive my access to this evaluation" (or something along those lines) box, you'll probably be okay. As littlegreenmom said, ask your counselor about the policy. At my school, we're not allowed to see recommendations, even one written for something that we applied for years ago. At least until we graduate and the school no longer has to submit recommendations for us.

@ littlegreenmom: I don't think there is any formal "policy"

we just go to the teachers personally and deal with them ourselves.

How would I be able to read them though? The form from the common app website says to give them a stamped envelope with the form and that the teacher will send it in themselves once their done. How will I ever even get to see it?

Every school seems to do it differently. Local high school does it the same way as your school, but limits the number of recs that students can get from each teacher - the kids never see it, teachers either give to counselor to mail, or mail it themselves after students provide postage.

I have another question regarding teacher recommendations. It now says that teachers MUST fill out the form online...but what if a teacher is used to just writing it from a print out?
