Is it OK to get a recommendation from someone who can't speak English very well, although they know you well? Or is this a bad idea, since they might not be able to effectively express what kind of person you are in a recommendation?

Can you ask them to ask someone else to polish their recommendation, or is this not allowed (obviously you yourself can't alter the recommendation)? Can you even ask them to write their recommendation in their native language, and then ask someone else to translate it?

Thanks ^^.

I would be very wary of it. I took a college class senior year which was taught by a eastern european grad student who loved me and was incredibly bright. He wrote me a supplemental rec and gave it to me and it was sadly horrible writing. It was obvious he was really trying and that he wanted to write me a great rec but unfortunately he his lack of knowledge of englich made it impossible to convey what he felt.

I’d suggest not doing it.

So you’re not allowed to ask someone to write a recommendation in their native language and then ask them to ask a second person to translate it to English for them?

Anyone? This is really important, since I no longer live in a country where English is the primary language spoken… Thanks :).
