I have a few questions about teacher recs.

1) How far could a REALLY strong teacher rec get me? Could it possibly put me over the edge into getting accepted?

2) If the teacher writing the rec from you graduated from the same school as you are applying to does that help? EX: A teacher who graduated from NYU writing me a rec for NYU.

Thanks a lot.

If you’re a borderline candidate, it can just push you over (especially if it’s a bad rec, it can push you out). A positive rec, however, probably won’t have much effect on the final decision.

If they are an active alumni/have good connections/have donated lots of money, then yes. Otherwise, I’d say the difference would be marginal.

Thank you very much Sirensong.

Although colleges emphasize a good rec, I myself don’t entirely trust their weight. The college doesn’t know if the teacher says that EACH student is their best student in years…however, I’ve also heard that amazing ones can get you far…
Basically, I think a bad one will kill you but a good one will just make your application marginally better.

I don’t believe this had much weight.

Good luck! :)
