With teacher recommendations for MT, does it have to be a teacher associated with your school? Is it acceptable to have my private voice teacher (under whom I have been studying for five years and who was a professor at a university) write a recommendation instead? The teachers from my school also know me well, but I think that the private teacher would be able to write a more-personalized and meaningful recommendation.

For academic teacher recommendations, they need to be from core academic subjects such as Math, English, History, Social Studies, Science, Foreign Language. For artistic recommendations (either required or optional/supplemental), they definitely do not need to be from someone at your school. In fact, a private voice teacher is an excellent choice. One of my daughter’s (a BFA graduate) two artistic recs was from her private voice teacher of five years.

My daughter used a private voice teacher and the artistic director of our regional theater. For the artistic recommendation, she didn’t use a teacher from her school.
