Ok so I'm going insane trying to figure out the best way to do teacher recs. Right now, I have two teachers in mind (one great, one pretty good) who I think would rank me very well, maybe even one of the best students of their career. However, 6 schools on my list have their own apps, and the rest use the common app, so that's 7 different letters. I'm giving them out really early (2 months or more) but it still seems like an awful lot to throw at a teacher, especially since other students will certainly want recs also. So should I spread the less important letters out to teachers who don't know me as well, or is my amount of letters typical and expected by teachers? One more thing- one of the teachers has already written me a short letter of rec for another program, but stupid stupid me forgot to write a thank you note. (I wasn't really aware of teacher rec etiquette at the time) What should I do and do you think this could affect what the teacher writes about me??

anyone????

pleeez help!

Write your teacher a thank you letter now. Better late than never. Just tell them that you're sorry it's late but you've been really busy and you want them to know that you did appreciate the rec.

I am not very acquainted with the letters of ecomendation process and haven't requested mine ones yet. But , you mentioned that you have various and have to decide on which ones to choose. As i see it, you should pick the ones that portay you the best and the ones that really promote you. It doesn't matter if the techer knew you better or not; if what he/she wrote praised you the way you wanted, you should go with it. I don't think it is hard to select which letters will be more effective and will seen better from the point of view of the perople who will read and consider it.

Your teacher probably won't mind. My calculus teacher did all 8 of my recs, as well as scholarship recs. Most teachers write one rec for you and then adjust it for each school-so it's pretty easy for them to crank 'em out.

What i would look for is a highly articulate teacher that witnessed your potential and is capable of conveying it in the letter. Concerning the burden for the teacher... Well, you could slip the teacher some cash in order to motivate him/her... lol -- anyway, don't take this seriusly, it is a joke. My friend was actually considering asking his teacher to " aggrandize ", or elaborate his letter beyond reality to make him look good, he had a very close relationship and was friendly with the teacher tough, so nobody should attempt this approach. Well, you shouldn't overload the teacher excessively, but if you explain your situation i am sure that he/she will comprehend and do their best to do as many letters as possible

Regards

thanks for the input- as far as the forgotten thank you, I am planning on attaching a cover letter with the new round of college apps; if I thanked him for last time and apologized for being late in that cover letter, do you think that would take care of it?

b ump

bippity boppity bump

"if I thanked him for last time and apologized for being late in that cover letter, do you think that would take care of it?"

Are you seriously asking us that question? We don't know your teacher
Why not talk to him/ her rather than expressing all of this through letters?

just pick two teachers and have them write one rec each. then have them mail it to all of your schools. why the heck would you need to get eight recommendations? have the teacher recycle the rec or slightl edit it per school.

Namaste, that is a good idea. I would find it stupid to ask a teacher to write 8 recs for 8 schools.

yea and more importantly you're not going to be too popular when ur asking 8 teachers for recs... even less so if your asking 1 teacher for 8 recs.

I second the talk to the teacher, don't write a letter. It can be seen as really rude to not say thanks, so you need to do that right away :p

Yea I realize I was dumb in not thanking my teacher earlier, but I'm afraid that now it will look like I'm just thanking her so she'll write me letters again. And as for the 8 letters, I think its dumb too but that's just how it worked out since I'm only applying to a few common app schools. Does anyone else have this problem?

I am confused... what is the common application?
