Some classmates at my school told me that I can't ask my journalism (newspaper) adviser to write one of my teacher recs because she's "not classified as a teacher."

At my school, journalism is a class, and all students who want to join must take a beginning journalism course in their sophomore or junior year. My newspaper adviser is the one who teaches these classes and advises the newspaper, magazine, etc.

My newspaper adviser also teaches a couple of english classes, although I haven't been in any of them.

So the question is, is this rumor of journalism advisers not counting as teachers true? Can I safely request a teacher recommendation from my journalism adviser, or do some colleges actually not count journalism advisers as teachers?
