how often do the schools call/e-mail your teachers about the recommendations? For what, usually?

Well, idk but I do know that sometimes they want to check your midterm/second term grade, so they ask your teachers.

Perhaps if they sense something is off, maybe it's not right, they'll call and check to make sure it's valid.

since most of the times recommendations are sent sealed and signed (well, I know not all the time) they feel like they don't need to check unless as prettyckitty says.

believe it or not, they do check. I know a friend at choate who said someone got kicked out even after she got in with a fake recommendation.

and in general, sometimes they call and ask more specific questions about you.

Oh, darn it, I should have practiced the teacher's handwriting before I sent it in. I think mine was a little off.

EDIT: Joking

For Andover Summer Session, I could read through the envelope when I held it up to the light. One of my teachers said, "He is one of the most intelligent students I have ever had." For the checklist, most were "truly outstanding" and a few were "excellent."

I couldn't read through the envelope for the prep school application because they sent it themselves. :( lol.

But on a more relevant note, I think adcoms will probably check with the teacher if it's just too good of a recommendation.

yeah they check a little bit

Why would one ask this question if the teacher recommendations were valid and above-board? It sounds like the OP was wondering if they could be forged!

The original post is almost a year old, BTW.
