Teacher Recs

Are they supposed to be all praise? My english teacher said that she can write me a "strong but honest" one where she says that she has to mention that I have slept in class due to taking too many APs and being too ambitious in my other activities (namely music). She thinks that I am brilliant but could have done more because of my busy schedule...

I'm very confused and concerned. I was really hoping she would write me a stellar rec since she knows me very well and her class has been the most engaging. I don't know what to do anymore.

How bad will this be?

A teacher is allowed to write whatever he or she feels the college should know about the student. That includes ‘bad’ behavior, like sleeping in class. If it is a minor issue, then most will probably omit it out of the fact that the student is relying on the teacher, but that certainly does not mean he or she can’t include such things in a recommendation. That’s why you try to get one from a teacher with whom you have a good standing.

Don’t ask your English teacher to write that recommendation. You’d rather have another teacher write a less convincing recommendation that doesn’t include any bad qualities.

Does anybody know how many teacher recs you need for the common app?

^I believe the Common App has 2 recommendation forms.

she’s hinting that you should not ask for her rec. Find a better one, even if its more generic

The number of recs you needs depends on the school to which you are submitting. The Common App changes the number according to the college’s preference.

And I agree, don’t have that teacher write the rec.

FutureVPfinance is right. Be glad that your teacher even gave you a hint that she’d write bad stuff in your recommendation. If I were you, I’d just get another teacher.

Too many praises can sound pretentious. My teacher showed me her rec and I felt my face burning. Like, I’m not all that.

Do the students get to see the teachers recommendations? What is the normal procedure?

^No. Actually the teachers shouldn’t.

But it’s tempting when your teacher showed it to you. :)

does being a shy student hurt when it comes to recs? i honestly don’t think i’ve ever really talked to most of my teachers unless i was asked a question.

^yes, chances are they won’t have much to say other than being prompt, turning in hw on time, good student, etc etc… nothing more than the generic rec

Hm, is your English teacher older or from a non-US background? Often, foreign teachers are from a culture where being blunt in recs and that sort of thing is more common.

Dang, I’m really sad. She really would have wrote me an amazing rec if it weren’t for her backwards philosophy on recs.

In Naviance, have you all already added teacher request details. Many schools do it officially by the end of Junior year by adding the details under “colleges I am applying” in Naviance

1)If we add or cancel a request, does the notification go to the respective teacher?
2) Once the request is cancelled it “STILL” shows up in the status as cancelled in Naviance? Is it not possible to delete it as such? Upon resubmitting the request it shows as 2 entries one as cancelled and the other as in progress.
3) Once cancelled and upon adding the SAME teacher, it still shows 2 entries one as cancelled and other as in progress. I would expect it to just show the updated status as the teacher detail is the same

Can some one please clarify on the above 3 questions.

Thanks

Can anyone clarify on the questions in the above post please. Also, if one has to just add a note in the naviance to the already selected teacher’s name, how can the same record be updated. Does it need to be cancelled and re-created or just updated? Updating the existing record does not work for some reason.

Thank you!

My brother got around 5 recs with supplements (Sports, etc.) and now attends U Rochester. Is 5 too many?

5 seems to be much too many. Most of the time, schools will take 1 or 2 teacher recommendations and will take 1 extra supplemental recommendation. So most of the time you could have a reasonable maximum of 3 recommendations, but admissions officers have told me that sending more than 1-2 extra recommendations gets irritating and they say to only send supplemental recs if they actually say something different about you instead of the standard praising of academic abilities.

I have a question, can I get a recommendation from a teacher, in whose class I got 75s? I mean, she’s my math teacher and I had her for like a whole year and I would need it for an engineering university.

What do you think? I don’t think she’ll write anything bad, cause she’s pretty cool and I’ve helped her during open school nights and stuff.

Thanks.
