Quick question… A lot of schools out there REQUIRE that applicants send in recommendations from teachers who have taught you in 11th and 12th grade - only. I’m pretty sure Brown doesn’t specify, but is it something that’s basically assumed for them, or do they just not care whether it’s an academic teacher in 11th grade or a music-club advisor in 9th? Please share your input, and fast!

one of my teachers taught me 8th 9th 10th and then i was president of the club she advised in 11th. i think its ok, she knows me the best out of every teacher. But is it ok? i also am not sure. Also, she is an italian teacher. is it ok not to have a main subject teacher?

i'm asking because I got one from a music teacher who taught all 4 years (not acadmic class though) and one from my student gov't advisor who I'm friendly with and it's a club I'm very involved in.

I was under the impression that a language teacher was considered an academic teacher, as opposed to an art, music, or other "elective" teacher. Brown doesn't exactly specify, but for colleges in general, is a language (i.e. Spanish) considered an academic subject?

i posted this somewhere else, but i guess this would be better
would a recommendation from the vp be any good? i know it says teacher but this vp can give me a good rec

Matt, you should have TWO academic teacher recs on the official teacher rec forms. These should be from teachers who you had either in eleventh or twelfth grade. They should be from academic subjects like core subjects or languages. I would not use music or clubs for these recs.

On top of the two academic recs, you can send SUPPLEMENTAL recs from those who have worked with you in a different capacity. These can be on letter heads and not on the app teacher rec forms. You should not do more than TWO of these. The music teacher and the student govt. advisor are appropriate supplemental recs, NOT for the two academic teacher recs.

The person who asked about languages, yes, that kind of teacher can be for an academic rec.

The Vice Principal question....that would be a supplemental rec, not one of the academic teacher recs.

Language is definitely an academic subject. My Spanish teacher wrote one of my recs!
