teacher/school official/EC recs

if a student's recs are all amazing (like "he/she's brilliant and has been through more than i can imagine.. he/she's the best i've ever had.. he/shes great at everything" and so on.. just like, couldn't be better).. could it count for more than it usually does?

do most priority/highly qualified candidate's teachers put "excellent"/"outstanding" for most of the categories ( you know the chart)..?

Highly qualified for the bs or for the current school of the child?

Blair, you need to stop being obsessive about this. These boards are insane.

for the boarding school.. like, the ones you get accepted.

"do most priority/highly qualified candidate's teachers put "excellent"/"outstanding" for most of the categories ( you know the chart)..?"
Yeah, most likely they would do that to your recs..

as for the first question, i really dont think it'll count that much more..since a majority of applicants probably have great recs too..

i kinda agree with Olivia here, chillax...

Most teachers will put excellent and great and all that on the recs, they aren't going to betray the student by putting bad stuff. It's more of what the teachers put in between the lines ie if they write "This student can be a great part of class discussions when she decides to participate." then schools will worried.

And really, you have got to breathe.

haha uknow, actually ive been wrrying bout that too. lol but then again, im prolly doing so for good reason. geez, ill be incredibly lucky if i can manage to squeeze into exeter/andover or somthing...

iono idk ive been feeling pretty stressed lately.

""if a student's recs are all amazing (like "he/she's brilliant and has been through more than i can imagine.. he/she's the best i've ever had.. he/shes great at everything" and so on.. just like, couldn't be better).. could it count for more than it usually does?""

uhh pardon my ignorance blairt, im just curious- those are some very nice compliments. have any teachers ever said thta to u before? 0.o

I know I'm nitpicking here :p, but if a teacher says "he/she's great ateverything" a school wouldn't like that. It means a teacher is generalizing and does not know the student's interests well enough to give specific details on their talents and interests.
Answering the actual question :D if a teacher said things along those lines, I think it must be higher than average (not every teacher says that a kid is top, top, top--most say good things, but "brilliant" is not average, I would think), but not extrordinary.

lol this makes me wanna tear open those little envelopes and see wat they say!!!

Sometimes it works if you hold them up to the light. :D Kidding, kidding. Actually, that might work. Shame I sent them already. I was so grateful my English and French teacher let me see what they wrote. My maths, science, and EC and personal recs will remain confidential . . . I feel kind of annoyed, because a lot of my application is things that I can't even see!

whoa really?? ^_^ that was certainly very nice of them

haha Olivia, I love that you're so honest. I think you just said what everybody else was thinking. Thanks! lol

And Blair, you're going to get into boarding school. If you don't get in anywhere else, you'll get into Tabor, and you'll get into other schools, don't worry. And anyway, aren't you the one who's like best friends with the president? If you said he knows you well enough to call them and tell them to accept you, then you'll definitely get in. Did you ever watch The West Wing?

Yes, I know, sabregiel. The French teacher simply didn't care and she gave it to me and asked me to check something on it (her English isn't perfect), and I told her they were confidential and she said that was all right, that I could look. My English teacher actually gave me a copy so that I could see what she wrote, which was very nice of her.

I think if they check the box that says "Top Few I have ever Teached", then that's pretty impressive. The TOP students at the TOP schools who get in would have that.

Thanks sabre! :D Haha.

There you go again, blairt. Another self-serving post that screams, "Me, Me, Me."

Then when someone posts a reply, you argue with them.

the adcoms care a lot more aobut the actual writing than the boxes....if u ask someone to write a rec, that person probably likes you anyway (if you cant figure that out, u dont deserve to go to any BS)..so many teachers would check the best boxes

I'd bet they do care more about the actual writing than the boxes, bearcats, but you don't get to choose who writes all of your recs. All students must have their English and mathematics teacher write recomendations.

oh i was thinking about college recs lol ..it's been 3 years since i applied...anyway..most teachers would have bias in their student when they check the boxes..also ... being top in a less competitive school will win you the top check boxes but again..that means nothing....adcoms look at the writing to find out things about the person

Sure, that makes sense. A teachers would probably feel guilty if they didn't check at least "Good--Above Average", even if it was an area where the student was lacking, so it's not really that valuable. Still, it must be worth something to them, or they wouldn't put it on the form at all.

i just asked my dorm faculty who's an admission counsellor, he said the boxes serve no purpose unless there's a box of 2 with the worst or second to worst boxes, then they raise a flag and read that rec carefully and find out what's lacking in a kid
