How exactly is the teacher supposed to send a supplemental letter of rec? I know they include my name and DoB in the letterhead but, that is about it. Also, if the teacher would rather use the evaluation form do you think that will be ok?

I also need help deciding if I need a supplemental to begin with. I asked my APUSH teacher to do my B evaluation, but I think might need my Young Republican's sponsor to fill in the holes he poked. My APUSH teacher liked me in a love/hate sort-of way. Mainly because, he was a Dem. (It was his view or your wrong) and he generally thought I was off my rocker. (I.E on exams/tests I would argue the opposite point he wanted us to take, such as I argued that we could have won the Revolutionary War without French aid, and he would be forced into giving me a good grade b/c I argued it well.) Also, I think my sponsor could include more extra-curricular activities I participated in but, I only had him once in 9th grade. (Would that really matter b/c of the EC sheet in the application?)

Any comments or ideas would be appreciated!

(P.S. Sorry for being so long, I really can get wound up about this kind of "well-maybe" stuff.)

Yes, that would be absolutely fine.

Whether or not to actually get a supplemental recommendation is totally up to you, but if you feel like it would help your application, then get it. Although it's not an automatic plus for your application, it's not going to hurt you, either.

EDIT, as a total aside: And have fun as a conservative in Boston -- if you like arguing with people, it will be just your cup of tea. :) I came to MIT as a Republican, and I really enjoyed getting into heated political debates with my friends.

my friend is getting a research mentor to write him a rec.

what form should he get? it's a college professor.

The professor wants to use the teacher evaluation (she explicitly says she wants to click the rankings...etc) but is it ok w/ MIT?

Extra recommendations. If you feel an extra recommendation would show an important additional side of you not already covered, you may send in an additional letter of recommendation. This in general would not need to be on an MIT recommendation form from the application; a separate sheet of paper is most common.

So it's perfectly fine to have the evaluation on MIT's own form (either form would be fine), and perfectly fine not to have the evaluation on MIT's form.
