Teacher violating privacy act?

Would a teacher be violating my rights if he somehow stole/received copies of my applications, including my attached resumes that I sent to colleges? If I did not grant this teacher permission to view these materials, and if I had no knowledge that this individual had a copy - and if this teacher decided to perhaps ruin me by sending emails to my colleges to try to discredit perhaps information I included in my packets - or defame me, would I be protected in any way - could I sue the teacher as well? The reason I'm worried is because I was alerted that copies of my portfolio/resume went missing when I placed them inside a folder under my bag. I know that the teacher's son hates me a lot, and for some reason - I think there is a feud going on between his respected father and myself. I may have sort of exaggerated alittle on some stuff - but not in a way that It would look like a lie - but in a way where I could stand out a little more - if a person that really hated me had the energy to do so, they could use this information, and possibly discredit me by accusing me of making my self look better than I really am. My guidance counselor signed and certified most of my information - but then again, I know if another teacher tried challenging me, admissions to colleges might investigate, and cause me to go through a lot of red tape, possible embarrassment, and etc. I have been accepted to a really good school that I have been dreaming about since I was 10 - no joke, my father went there, and my grandfather, and etc. If I got rescinded, I will commit suicide cause I could not live through the possible embarrassment of having to look at my father or anyone every again - Well, basically, everyone knows I got accepted there, since.. January - so its been quite sometime, and I think the portofio went missing back in December, just before break. Admissions asked nothing - some would say im paranoid - but I have to say ,I have a reason to be alittle scared. My biggest fear is that - the teacher is holding onto my stuff, and might start to do his discrediting revenge scheme after I enroll so I will be helpless, and have no ways to be in close contact with my community and GC, Vice Principal, Principal if anything should happen. And if everything goes to hell and the college did want me out, I would have to wait ... probalby another year to find another place. Remember, I'm thinking about the worst possible outcome here - I'm sure other people have worried about situations like these before. Can I have some feedback? Is my paranoia justified, or perhaps... ridiculous? Thank You.

Seriously, calm down. No one is that malevolent. Even if they were out to get you, unless you claimed you won some awards you didn’t get, no one would probably care since you’re already in.

Again, chill.

If he stole that stuff he’d be sent to jail, not to talk of losing his job and getting sued. Trust me, his life would be ruined if he did any of that stuff.

your paranoia is disturbing.

seriously.. your paranaoia is truly disturbing… if you really did the things you did in your application, than you have no problem with admissions… just chill

I hear they’ve recently invented these things called “paragraphs”, might want to give those a try.

snap out of your funk.

be

Sometimes people see others differently than one sees his/herself. What I mean is - not everyone exactly knows the semantics that we imply in our application. I might say something that I think represents me, while my teacher might see me as a liar in how I portray myself, while my friends and family see it all as fact. I might’ve exaggerated a bit as well now that I think about it - but I honestly meant no harm - If the teacher wants to be vindictive and try to challenge my certified credentials, I think he should do it now instead of waiting for me to matriculate where I am helpless to defend my claims. – :frowning:

What is a “paragraph”?

What college is this?

" If I got rescinded, I will commit suicide cause I could not live through the possible embarrassment of having to look at my father or anyone every again "

I actually made a couple of suicide attempts when I was a teen due to situations that I thought were embarrassing. . The issues were things that now appear very minor, and I’m glad that I lived.

I also now have seen people who successfully faced far more embarrassing situations than those that caused me to try to kill myself. I’ve seen people face such situations and rise above them even thought their situations were very embarrassing and were their own fault. This includes people who have gotten kicked out of prestigious college due to stupid actions, and it includes teens who embarrassed their upstanding families by committing crimes that ended up being reported in the paper.

Please realize that suicide is a permanent situation to a temporary problem.

When it comes to embarrassing situations including things like having an admission rescinded, it’s amazing how little people care about it, and how quickly those who do care about things like that move on.

So, even if something bad happens in regard to your college experience, please realize that it won’t be worth it to kill yourself. I’m sure, too, that your parents would rather have you alive – even if you embarassed them – than dead.

Saying this, too, as the parent of one kid who has done things that really were very embarrassing.

Relax. There is 99.9999% chance that nothing will happen. Most probably your teacher never saw the folder. Either you lost it, or someone took your app as an example for himself only. Even if your teacher has it - if you didn’t LIE, he will not start this mess. He is a grown-up person and knows well that in case of a scandal his reputation will suffer as well … unless you really lied big time.

As for exaggeration - these sufferings are your punishment. The more you exaggerated the worse you feel now. If the exaggerations are minor, see if you can prove that you didn’t lie. Like putting more hours - you include practicing at home or travel time, or just rounded up too liberally.

Can you punish the teacher for stealing you package? No. Because you will have to prove that HE stole it. And you cannot. You do not even think he did it himself. The folder “disappeared” from under your backpack … OK. The teacher will say he found the folder in his mailbox weeks later. So he read it as he reads everything he gets from students. And saw that you had stretched things on your app. He can (and formally he should) take the folder to GC or school administration. No wrongdoing on his part. Still, even if he did, you should have lied big time for serious consequences to follow. Situation is too fishy. But while deciding whether to let go or proceed with you, they could have performed an internal investigation and asked teachers leading the activities you described about the extent of exaggeration. So other people may know.

I think it’s ridiculous. I’ve had a couple of friends get apps stolen, usually they go to the bathroom and it’s in the toilet because some moron thought it was funny. I think you’re overanalyzing the situation and it’s probably some jerk thinking he’s cool for stealing your app.

What I WOULD do is just casually mention it to my counseler, just say

Oh by the way, I had some papers taken, copies of my applications and stuff…why anyone would think that was funny I don’t know…but just an FYI…in case someone turns them in or something

ps- did you have your Social Security # on there anywhere, or passwords, or anything like that? If so, the Social Security # is something to be aware of

Yeah, actually cgm is right. You shouldn’t even be first worried about being rescinded, I’d be worried about your SSN-that can really ruin you.

Wow! You must have included some big lies in your application to be this worried…

Of course my SSN was on the application. All of my personal private info is on it.

Executive, I really hope you were joking about “suicide”, and that was a very bad if not stupid joke. Please be aware that your words can be taken seriously and you might end up in the nearest hospital if you start joking like that in the company of “real” people (compared to “screen names”). With suicide, there is no smoke - it is always consisered a fire.

There are ways to protect your identity even if your SSN ends up in the wrong hands.

Talk it over with ur dad, executive. And please don’t think about suicide. And tht teacher can get suspended if he really stole ur stuff. Just mention to ur counselor tht ur forms got stolen and say ur worried bout ur SSN. Don’t let in tht ur worried bout ur app essay. Is there any way u can make an official complain?
Make it all bout the SSN though so the “thief” of ur app appears to be the crook he/she is. If they try to play u, they end up red handed.

so just go

Ms/Mr GC…my applications came up missing from my backpack, and seems they were taken, why who knows. However, they did include lots of personal information, along with my SSN, just wanted to let you know, so in case something “funny” happens, you are aware of my information being in some idiots hands.

Thanks

There’s no reason to feel so scared unless you’ve claimed to be the president of a small African nation in your app. Just chill.
