For one of my teachers I am not 100% sure he/she will write be a excellent recommendation but he/she has the potential to, So before I have him/her write it should I send him/her an email saying something like

" Do you feel comfortable writing me a good letter of rec.?"

worded like that I don't think it sounds offensive, what do you think?

I would just trust him. That does sound like you’re unsure and maybe even a little awkward.

I’ve heard that you should ask that before you actually ask any teacher to write you one, and I think it’s best just to be sure. I’d use ‘would you’, though, instead of ‘do you’. I’d rather ask in person as well, though that may just be me being quirky.

Many teachers would let you know if the recommendation will not be a good one; however, do you think the teacher is the type to do so? If you have serious doubts, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to just ask

ya lol i just asked to simply confirm if they feel comfortable still, writing a great letter of rec

and then to balance that tone i ended with

respectfully,
