I'm about to start at ucf this fall, and i'm wondering if you have to be a stage manager major or the like to tech for the productions. I've been doing tech work since freshman year in high school and I'd love to continue in college, but my major isn't related to the theater department and I don't really have a portfolio. I heard you don't have to have a theater major to audition for the productions, so I was wondering if tech worked the same way. Thanks for your help!

I would guess that ANY show would be happy to have one more tech person, and won’t turn down a volunteer who is willing to do whatever is needed back stage.

Many universities have a required tech course that must be taken to work crew on their productions. Part of it is a safety issue, and part is to give fair unit credit to all work done on university productions. Perhaps you could call or email the head of UCF’s tech theatre and offer your services–and get their recommendations.

And if theatre tech is what you are really interested in, why don’t you switch your major over to that . . .
