Congrats to all those that have gone through the process and the interviews and the sweating the details on your portfolio. Now how do you decide which is the best fit for your child?? It is a glorious relief to finally hear but now you have to make the tough decisions. Don't get me wrong , I like having a choice.
I am just so glad for these kids that the hard work has paid off.

sorry what does CCM stand for??

CCM - University of Cincinnati, College Conservatory of Music

Deciding where to go is a hard choice - the only one our son wasn't totally crazy about was SUNY. He visited 3 times and never changed his mind. The other two programs are similar and both have great department heads but the actual colleges are completely different. NSCA is small and all arts CCM is huge, a true college campus.

Can we include what part of tech theatre these kids will be going to school for? Just curious.

The waiting game still isn't over. My son's first choice is Carnegie Mellon and they have an April 1 date for letting students know. He went there for the pre-college program for 6 weeks this past summer, and loved the school. I can't believe how hard he worked. He took classes with many of the professors who work there during the year and he feels he will be challenged the most there.
I think he will learn alot from ANY of the places he applied. I've tried to do as much research as possible, and Ithaca, Emerson, UCONN, Syracuse, Purchase all have stellar reputations for tech theatre. CCM, North Carolina School of the Arts as well.
The good news is--I don't think there's a "wrong" choice! Of course, the more expensive school, the more debt he will be saddled with after graduation....
He wants to focus on lighting design (pun not intended)

the North Carolina School of the Arts for Lighting Design. Wait-listed at CMU & Emerson. Not disappointed at all. I love NCarts and may chose it over CMU should I be accepted.

Thank you to all: CA Griffon, Techiemom, lynnm, mbryant27, and countless others! Thank you for posting wonderful posts. I think my s has finally decided--CMU. But it was a HARD choice. He loved every single program he saw!
Good luck to everyone!

Bumping the thread up.

Hi:

Our son was accepted at Ithaca for lighting design, and wait listed at Carnegie Mellon and Boston University. His first choice is Boston, but Ithaca gave him a real good financial aid package. Carnegie's wasn't as good, and Boston won't send him anything until he gets off the wait list. They have until June 18th to let him know. In the meantime we had to send the deposit to Ithaca by May 1st. Boston made it clear that there might not be as much aid available to those on the wait list.

The clock is ticking for us applying for loans, and for him to get ready to go off to college. Help! Any thoughts, advise or words of wisdom from those who might have gone through this before.

We simply can't send him to college unless the financial aid is there.

Thanks,
Jimw

PS - Good luck to all that have been accepted!

My son was in a similar situation. He was deferred at his ED school and then waitlisted. His #2 school gave him an ED acceptance and nice financial package. Meanwhile #1 indicated there would be little aid left over if he did make it off the waitlist. Son didn't miss a beat and sent off the "no thanks" response to #1 school. He hasn't looked back.

Thank you,

The person who helped us with our financial aid paperwork told us that, from her experience,Boston is generous with their aid. However, their tuition is more that Ithaca's. So if they give less than they might if he wasn't on the wait list then the aid probably still won't be enough us to afford to send him.

I have read here in other discussions that the cost of getting your child to and from college, and to maybe visit once in awhile is a factor to consider in where they go. Ithaca is less than a three hour drive from our home while Boston is close to six. Gas prices are going up, and with the driving time increased then what would be a day trip to Ithaca becomes an overnighter To Boston. He is majoring in theatre production, and my wife and I certainly want to go and see any shows that he works on.

Thanks for letting me vent.

Sincerely,
jimw

Techiemom,
Which school did your son finally choose and how did he make that decision?

jimw~

Sounds like a good plan. When visiting Ithaca, we got the impression they had a very well rounded program in all of the disciplines. Since I'm sending my son across country, I can definitely relate to the cost issue and also to the desire (probably unfulfilled) to see the shows.
