Technical terms in application: yes/no?

I’m applying to a computer science major and I’ve done several projects relating to artificial intelligence that I want to talk about, but the problem is that there’s a lot of highly specialized terminology involved (e.g. deep learning, RNN) that I don’t think I’ll have enough words to explain. Can I expect the people who read my application to understand these terms?

I would not expect college admission officers to know highly specialized artificial intelligence terminology. Applications are read by people who do admissions not artificial intelligence for a living, If I were you I’d make things less technical and more approachable.

Yes, you need to be able to explain it to a non-technical audience. For what it’s worth, I think that using terms like deep learning and neural networks would probably be okay, as long as you put a sort description (example: a neural network is a program that can learn and be trained as it runs, modeled after the human brain), but anything more specific than that will probably not be understood by a general admissions officer.

I’m a senior CS major whose had to present highly technical results to non-technical audiences (senior leadership at internships, etc). I’m also fairly familiar with AI and machine terminology, so feel free to PM with specifics and I’ll be happy to help you figure out how to showcase your expertise while still allowing it to be accessible!
