Technical Theatre/ Design Programs

I'm a Junior right now and in about a month I'm going to start touring schools that I'm interested in. I've been doing tech theatre since freshman year and I really want to continue in it professionally. I want to go to a college with a really good BFA tech program. My ultimate goal is to be a scene designer or TD on Broadway or on a large stage show in Vegas. My grades are pretty good right now (Mostly A's and couple B's) and TONS of theatre experience.

So far I've planned on seeing UCF only because I live in Florida and I've seen a few shows over there and they're pretty good. I would like to go north to New York because I know that's the best place to gain connections in the business. I really want a school that offers good internships and focuses a lot on theatre.

Schools that I've considered so far are; UCF, UNCSA, and Purchase

Any more recommendations or feedback would be great!

In NYC, NYU, Pace and Marymount Manhattan all offer programs in theater Production and Design. I know that NYU is a BFA, and I believe that PACE was looking to create a BFA program. I don’t remember if MM is BFA or BA.

In the NYC area, but not in the city, I’ve also heard good things about Rutgers and Muhlenberg. Not sure if they are BA or BFA.

Best of luck to you! Figuring out where you want to be and looking into the schools is definitely the fun part of the process!!!

There is a lot of information on this forum. Try searching on technical theater or your area of design. Or start here:

Thank you for the recommendations BigCityLight. I’m definitely going to try to check out NYU.

And thank you for that link theater mom. That forum was EXTREMELY helpful.

Montclair State Univ in NJ has an excellent program as does Rutgers Mason Gross. Both are BFAs. They are also both very close to NYC- Montclair is a 25 minute train ride. Pace is now a BFA, however, the curriculum has more Gen Ed requirements than many of the other programs mentioned to you so far. Marymount is a BA in design. Fordham also has a BA in design and is in NYC. They have some terrific faculty, but the program has a significant number of serious Gen Ed requirements which is a huge plus for some students, and definitely not for others. It’s a fantastic location with good resources

Another thought: Judging from your choices so far, cost may be an issue. But in my experience, good grades were a big plus when it came to grant money in arts programs.

Cost isn’t necessarily an issue. I’m more concerned about whether the program is worth the price. After I did a good amount of research on NYU I’m thinking it’s worth it. I guess I didn’t really look into it well enough the first time I looked into it because I’m really starting to like it now. I’m definitely going to visit it and Rutgers when I go up north.

Pittsburgh and Chicago aren’t NYC which you indicated you prefer, but the program at CMU is one of the best, so you might want to put that on your list to consider, as well as DePaul. Philadelphia has UArts which has a very strong theatre (including design) program, but is a smaller school in terms of offerings outside of theatre. If a larger city is important, but not necessarily NYC, you may want to add the Cincinnati Conservatory to your list. There are also good programs in and around Washington., DC- American and Catholic.

If you’re in FL, it might be worth it to look at something of the North Carolina/South Carolina schools that could be in driving distance. Coastal Carolina, UNSCA, Elon, etc!
