Technical Theatre / Production / Technical Direction / Design major

I hope that "cross posting" this link to another thread I started over in "Other Majors" is acceptable... It seems that folks here would have valuable opinions on this, so I hope you will go and take a look:

Elon has a good technical theatre program.

I know that CCM (UC) has a very active Hillel and wonderful Design/Tech Program.

http://www.hillelcincinnati.org/site/home.asp

I would also take a look at Emerson in Boston.

Take a look at Muhlenberg. The facilities are wonderful, it has an active Hillel. It's a BA in theatre. You can specialize in technical aspects.Students can also work at their summer MT prodcutions too
I just asked my D, and she said there is an orthodox synagogue close by, but she's not sure if it's in walking distance. If you contact hillel on campus, they can tell you.

It's been awhile since I have seen any discussion about technical theatre. I thought I would start this up again. My son, a senior in HS has applied to 8 schools for stage management. He had his first portfolio review last week at Virginia Commonwealth and will present at Emerson and Syracuse in 2 weeks. He will be going to Unifies (Chicago) in Feb. Just wanted to know if there were any other techies out there. I know this is thread is for musical theatre but for the last 2 years this is where I have gained most of my information about performing arts programs.

Thanks JudyL! After spending 2 years in this group, I am now looking for a good tech program for my son...probably BFA conservatory(he claims to be done with anything but that so Liberal Arts are not a priority...he learns by doing so the tech art makes perfect sense). He is also an accomplished actor but seemingly most good tech programs have great drama programs as well so he could still dabble on the other side as well.

I will try to visit the other thread as well...so much of my expereince has been here with my D...I hate to go away!

MikksMom

I used the link in #1 to see what information I might find on tech theatre programs available in summer camp for high schoolers, then realized the link led to another forum not within the MT folder. So I'm reposting my information from the other thread, because I'm sure this forum gets much more traffic than the other forum:

I ran into the parent of a freshman from the high school that my D graduated from last year. Evidently her daughter has really gotten the tech bug, and already lives, eats and breathes it. She has a particular preference for lighting and sound, and has not only gotten very involved at our high school, but other local high schools as well, helping with lighting and sound for their productions.

Her parents would like to provide her with an opportunity to attend a summer camp somewhere that would allow her to gain more experience in this area, and asked me if I knew of any place. I told her I didn't, but I knew of a place I could ask other parents. I also told her that any programs that might be recommended would probably be several-week, boarding programs, and not in our area (Chicago). She seemed OK with this.

Anyone have any recommendations I can pass along to her?

Hey Teri! Let me know if you get any good answers on summer stuff...we are trying to find an apprentice/intern program for my S and have come up pretty empty...

MikksMom

uh oh... I'm in trouble. I was thinking you'd be a prime resource!

Teri and Mikksmom- Muhlenberg pays it's techies...and they take high school kids too. There is a link on the SMT page. I know last year one of the tech kids was from Washington State, and they come from all over. Not too much supervision in their off hours, so it might be too much, depending on the child involved.

Wright State University has a GREAT tech program!

How embarassing that of the two posters on this board, neither one of us thought of the 'Berg.

Maybe if my D stays there this summer, my friend's mom (who knows my D) would be more open to her daughter participating.

As for Wright State, is it a summer program for high schoolers?

oops for Muhlenberg. They have to be 16 by this May. This girl is just a freshman in high school. Maybe for next year.

oops, my bad. I should have checked the age restrictions.

that's OK... I did a little more googling and found these possibilities:

Wright State had a technical theatre program last year for a week; nothing up this year about offering the same program. WSU - Pre-College Programs - Residential Institutes Available Classes

Syracuse has a six-week program:
Technical Theatre

The Center for Creative Youth (CCY), a summer pre-college program, offers talented high school students five weeks of intensive study in the arts at Wesleyan University.
CCY - Areas of Study

I think there are other programs out there, but you must be older (i.e. Northwestern)

Interlochen also offers theatre tech, but boy is it expensive!

YIKES - Syracuse isnt inexpensive either - gee I paid less than that for NYU.....

There are many summer organizations that teach technical theatre. Many of them in the form of "camps." Some very good, some just average.

However, quite a few summer theatres will take on "apprentices" from the high school ranks. Most will work running shows, but you do learn quite a bit from this activity. Under 16 is a near impossibility at this level due to liability issues.

Not sure what area you live in, but if you are near a summer theatre company, even if they don't advertise taking high school interns, call them up and tell them your son or daughter is a techie and interested in working for the theatre.

I worked for a summer theatre in high school and learned more about theatre during those two summers than at any other point in my life.
