I am currently a junior in high school and am planning to major in technical theatre, which is something I have been interested in for a while. I recently just joined my school’s drama club for the first time and am doing tech there. I am looking for a college that has a fairly good acceptance rate (75+%) that has a good tech program. I am looking for a higher acceptance rate college because my freshman and sophomore grades were not great at all, my junior grades are pretty good so far (few snags but nothing super major), and I am going to make sure my senior grades stay good. Any suggestions at all would be helpful. Thanks!
One of the first things to decide is if you want a BA in theater or a BFA in Theater Design/Tech. Generally speaking BFA programs put less weight on grades and mostly look at your theater qualifications/aspirations/attitude (and for which you will have to present your portfolio). Someone seeking admission to CMU will need a much higher GPA to get into a regular BA program than into their BFA program. Many of the BFA schools do have a minimum required GPA which is generally not too high, though a few schools like NYU and MI do make grades part of the equation.
Let us know what degree you’re looking for, and maybe also your GPA, and then it will be easier to suggest specific schools.
I am just looking for a BA because I am planning on minoring in something, and have heard that is difficult when you are getting a BFA, and I have not checked my GPA lately but think that it is somewhere around 3.1/3.2 (I’ll post the actually GPA when I am able to check it).
3.1 GPA as of right now, that is not my final GPA since I am not a senior yet, so my GPA might change.
You might consider looking for colleges with theater departments that put on a lot of productions in the school year. Nothing beats experience.
I agree, that is exactly what I was planning on looking for. I am hoping to find something in a warmer state than I am currently living in (Michigan) because I don’t really want to have to battle snow in order to get to class, I am permanently confined to a wheelchair and would like to be located somewhere where I would be able to get around easily.
Pt. 2 I have already been looking at ASU and Eckerd college and am really impressed with both schools, I have also been looking at Columbia College Chicago which goes against the no snow thing but I am interested in their program so I would be willing to figure something else out.
Elon
Acceptance rate of 54% but very good in tech theater and in NC warmer than Michigan
Here are some schools that have good theater programs that are not a difficult admit academically. You would want to investigate how much the BA theater kids are part of the main stage performances and how much of the curriculum they share with the BFA kids. I think it’s fair to say that the more the BA shares with the BFA program, the higher the quality of the BA training.
Otterbein - this one I do know BA theater kids are very involved with the BFA kids
