So

I'm currently a freshman architecture student, and it isn't exactly working out. I'm looking into prospective majors, especially in H&SS. I was wondering if anyone could give any insight into the Technical Writing and communication program. I really enjoy writing, and I am attracted to the program because of it's scientific and technical background. Thanks so much!

Hi, Creative Writing major here.

What kind of writing do you enjoy? To be honest, I’d recommend professional writing over technical writing if you really enjoy the creative aspects of writing.

Technical writing is more or less the art of writing manuals. APIs for programmers, how-tos for TV remotes, textbooks, reports, business proposals, anything of that sort. You are telling people how to do something.

Some people really like this, because it’s the art of imparting knowledge to others, which is somewhat of a lost art in the writing business. Others really hate it because you’re That Guy who writes the manuals that no one ever reads (except when they’re angry because the product that came with the manual is malfunctioning.)

The major up-side to this major is that no one really wants to get a degree in it (it’s considered very boring to most writers), so you’ll be able to find jobs and internships pretty easily. Apple, for example, hires a lot of technical writers to write their documentation.
