Are there specific laptops or smartphones you feel are better for incoming freshman? What is the best combination of smartphone, laptop and tablet? Where you can get more tech support and make them more customizable to the student’s need?
That is specific to each college. Find out your college’s specifications and what they support and recommend. It may vary by major.
Hard to beat the iPad Pro
Do a search of the CC. There are quite a few threads.
D will be heading to school next year with her Surface Pro, Docking station, a couple external monitors, and our family’s Office 365 and McAfee Total Protection.
D has an iPhone, and I may get her an Apple Watch for graduation (I own one and it works really well with the iPhone). I wouldn’t consider these necessary though with respect to college, and I don’t think Apple has a significant advantage compared to high-quality Android options such as Samsung. It really comes down to personal preference here.
There’s a good chance that the school will provide Office 365 subscriptions (or other equivalent products that they use throughout the school), so I would rush out and purchase a subscription just now. Additionally, purchasing the computers from the school may entitle you to free IT support from them, so check this out before buying from someone else.
Do not skimp on Anti-virus software!
@user4321 any of the microsoft surfaces > the iPad pro. Hard to beat a tablet that’s also a proper computer.
Definitely check with the school you will attend. Often deals through schools. Plus, summer is when the manufacturer’s college deal occur- don’t rush things. It would seem that there are many good choices because students come with different budgets and already owned stuff. Remember to not be so concerned with the tech you ignore other aspects of your college life.
Either a Windows or Mac laptop will work fine, it is more a matter of preference. The iPad Pro is great and allows you to write notes by hand and record lectures to reference your notes.
Also, most schools provide free Tech Support for students.
Are you writing an article @jenbunny1121 ? Your only two threads are about dorm/college tech.
