I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Ga Tech posted final counts:

Preliminary final freshman app count= approx 25,800. Representing 45% overall increase from last yr. Decisions will be released March 15.

The jump to the common app exceeded all their expectation and I assume they are swamped in reviewing applications since I can't imagine they doubled their admission staff. Tech typically admits 7500-8K students to get the class of 3500ish who enroll. Already they have admitted 5K EA so the remaining 14K applicants not counting the 3500 who were deferred are fighting for the remaining 2500 to 3K spots. This means the RD rate will be around 16 to 17%. If my math is correct (and I am not an engineer) it means total acceptance rate will be around 31 to 32%. Looking at data from two years ago it is a significant drop which really translate Tech into a reach for many students especially out of state.

I really hate when colleges join the Common App because you always see these kinds of number. I bet this 45% increase is the largest for a college joining the CA in its first year.

Good luck to those still awaiting admission decisions. With these kinds of number be sure to have applied to match and safety schools you love.

Unfortunately, most of those extra students that applied through the common app have Tech just as a safety and had very little intention to enroll at all therefore bumping out kids that would have.

In the other hand, if they end up with a higher enroll king ratio that they were expecting this could be by far the largest freshman class at tech. Expect huge class sizes and a lot of TA’s…

Well I already have my #2 and #3 acceptance letters. So it’s just a waiting game now and with those statistics…it doesn’t look good for me but lets have some faith :)

Thanks for the update itsv…this is pretty amazing ! Fortunately, my D made it…she received her acceptance letter today. However, there is no mention of any stream/discipline (she had applied for ChemE) in the letter. Is this a common practice for GTECH?

My son made it. When he applied to GTECH civil engineering he thought it was a safety. After he got in, we realized we underestimated Gtech. What a relief…

@i012575 That is common! If accepted to Tech you can major in any field of study you like. There is no application process for the majors at Tech

GT only has so much housing. The kids that were accepted EA can start to apply for housing starting Jan 21st. When they do they have to put down a deposit.I think it’s around $600. Now they don’t have to apply right away, the last day they can apply and be guaranteed housing is May 1st. However some dorms are better than others( depending on what you are looking for) and so around here most kids apply for housing as soon as they can. However the last day you can cancel without a penalty is Feb 26th…

The point I’m trying to make is I would think they look at how many kids put down the deposit and that would give them an idea of how many EA kids are actually going to enroll. So if the housing deposit number on Feb 26th is higher than in years past they would accept less in RD on March 15th. Of course I could be wrong.:)

@i012575 There are no fixed number of seats for majors/branches of engineering or any requirments to be in those major. Once youre accepted to Georgia Tech you can major in whatever you like. There are no restrictions are applications for any majors.

^ Unless you are a transfer student and then its a different. You would have to apply for the major and then they only let so many transfers in depending on the major and I don’t think you can change your major or at least not as easily as a freshman would be able to.

Thanks again for the clarifications ! Much appreciated. On the other hand, my D is still tending towards UMinn wherein she will have to apply for ChemE after year 1. Maybe I can convince her to think otherwise :-)

MN was colder than Alaska this year with a 20 MPH windchill of -20. Here in Atlanta it was 40 degrees warmer during that time with no wind, nuff said.

Yeah this news is kinda depressing:/ I was just deferred. By previous year’s admissions I definitely would have been accepted but now I don’t know how much of a chance I have of getting in.
