<p>Dear _______, </p>

<p>Congratulations! The Committee on Admissions joins me in the most
rewarding part of my job — informing you that you have been selected
for admission to Columbia University in the City of New York. As a member
of the Class of 2008, you will be a participant in an academic community
wealthy in intellectual and personal talents of every kind. We are fully
confident that the gifts you bring to our campus will be unique and
valuable and that your abilities will be challenged and developed here. </p>

<p>You and your family have every reason to be proud of the great
achievements that we acknowledge today with this good news. We hope you
will share your joy and excitement with the faculty at your school who
have helped you reach this happy day. </p>

<p>The Columbia faculty, students and administration look forward to
welcoming you into a community that thrives on our combination of a
demanding curriculum, a diverse and talented student body, and a college
town abundant in dynamism and opportunities. We know that you will
contribute to the academic and personal excellence that has been the
hallmark of Columbia students since 1754. The coming years at Columbia
promise to be lively and joyful ones indeed as we celebrate the 250th
anniversary of our founding. </p>

<p>It is our great pleasure to congratulate you on the successes that have
earned you this fine honor, and we eagerly anticipate the successes that
you will no doubt enjoy at Columbia. If any member of the admissions staff
can assist you in the days ahead, please do not hesitate to write or call. </p>

<p>P.S. A large envelope is on the way! </p>

<p>December 11, 2003 </p>

<p>Dear _______, </p>

<p>The Committee on Admissions has carefully reviewed your application to
Columbia University under the Early Decision Program. I am sorry to inform
you that we are not able to offer you a place in the Class of
2008.Official notification follows via mail.I realize that this is
disappointing news for you and your family, particularly in light of your
strong interest in Columbia. </p>

<p>Over the past six years, the first-year applicant pool to Columbia has
nearly doubled in size, making admissions intensely competitive for
candidates seeking places here. The Committee on Admissions carefully
evaluates each candidate's credentials in the context of the applicant
pool; because our decisions are the product of many hours of thorough
assessment and review, we must emphasize that they are final and not
subject to appeal. </p>

<p>I want you to know that our decision in no way reflects a lack of
confidence in your ability to achieve success at a competitive college and
throughout life. Our experience is that the vast majority of students who
do not gain admission here go on to distinguish themselves at many fine
colleges and universities all over the world. </p>

<p>We appreciate the interest you have demonstrated in Columbia and wish you
the best in your college career and future endeavors. </p>

<p>Sincerely, </p>

<p>Eric J. Furda
Executive Director
Undergraduate Admissions</p>

<p>YES! ALL OF US WILL!! WE WILL GO TO COLUMBIA! COLUMBIA- HERE I COME!!!</p>

<p>btw, where did u get this from glory?...lol</p>

<p>Lol, the 04 archives from the old board.</p>

<p>At least the email tells you your decision status from the beginning, so you dont have to employ your skimming skills while your heart pumps blood sporadically throughout the body...</p>

<p>lol...hahaha....true!</p>

<p>Wow...the contrast is just way too much for me to handle....makes you think, doens't it?</p>

<p>"I want you to know that our decision in no way reflects a lack of
confidence in your ability to achieve success at a competitive college and
throughout life. "</p>

<p>LMFAO. If only people will REALLY undestand that when they get rejected, haha.</p>

<p>Wow, reading this just totally freaked me out...wow...freaking...still freaking...omg...wow....</p>

<p>So, what's a deferral like?</p>

<p>The excruciating anticipation...as the email with the subject title "Columbia University" uploads...... 5....4.....3......2...... CONGRATULATIONS!!!! :) <em>tears of joy..</em></p>

<p>Hooray!!!!
Can't wait for that moment :)</p>

<p>I can feel me receiving one already!</p>

<p>since you guys really want to know what the deferral letter is like...</p>

<p>December 11, 2003</p>

<p>Dear.......,</p>

<p>The Committee on Admissions has carefully considered your candidacy for
Early Decision to Columbia and has decided to defer a final action on your
application. Official notification follows via mail. When the Committee
convenes in the coming months, your case will be reconsidered in the
context of the full application pool. However, since the final decision
will not reach you until April, I urge you to submit other applications in
order to keep your college options open.</p>

<p>I understand that this action may be a disappointment to you and your
family, but the Committee on Admissions has deferred only those candidates
whose credentials may prove competitive in the context of the regular
decision pool.In past years, deferred Early Decision candidates have been
admitted at a rate comparable to Columbia's overall acceptance rate.</p>

<p>The Committee encourages you in the interim to let us know of any
significant new achievements since your Early Decision application was
submitted; please report these by mail, not by telephone. Please also have
your school send your mid-year grades using the Mid-Year School Report
contained in the application. We appreciate the interest you have
expressed in Columbia by your Early Decision application and assure you
that your enthusiasm will be remembered when your application is reviewed
again.</p>

<p>Sincerely,</p>

<p>Eric J. Furda
Executive Director</p>

<p>Soul - was there something major you accomplished in between that period that you think might have swayed the final decision in ur favor?</p>

<p>I think what helped me the most was that more people from my school applied to Columbia RD. That way, they had a better context to evaluate my grades and extracurriculars (which they couldn't do during ED since I was the sole applicant). Most probably they compared my stuff with the other students that were applying and decided that it wasn't so bad, and if they were to pick one from the bunch, they might as well pick the one who did ED.</p>

<p>In terms of actual achievements in the interim, there weren't much except for the following:
-rank went up from 8th to 6th; GPA from 4.81 to 4.89
-qualified for AIME
-got a new elected position</p>

<p>soul, why do you think they deferred you in the first place?</p>

<p>why does the acceptance end with "with warmest regards" and rejection "sincerely,"</p>

<p>To show that they're serious when they say you've been rejected.</p>

<p>It'd be kinda bad if they said "Sorry, you've been REJECTED. Have a nice day!"</p>

<p>oh god, I hope every single night that the acceptance comes and that it says Congratulations and not 'I'm sorry'.</p>

<p>I had a dream last night about running around to a computer lab at school, WAITING for a computer to be freed up so that I can check my email... and then seeing the congratulations... and then suddenly running out into the hallways screaming with joy.</p>

<p>lol for a second there i thought it ended with "seriously"</p>

<p>You suck.
seriously,
Eric Furda.</p>

<p>ouchh</p>

<p>Is RD a weaker pool?</p>

<p>hehehe, i like the way you dream thomas.</p>

<p>Yu Shi - do you know if any other CC deferrals last year got accepted in the end? And yeh.. why do you think they deferred you in the first place?</p>

<p>Don't HAVE dreams about getting accepted.. Just dream that you will get accepted!!
Dreams that you dream in your sleep are usually "opposite" lol..</p>

<p>Anyway..fingers crossed! Good luck tout le monde!</p>

<p>thanks a lot silver_wavez, I thought my dream was a positive sign >=O
I already had a dream! O noes!</p>

<p>lol oh well.</p>
