Tele-Bears Question!!!

What exactly are telebears and these phases...i'm really lost o.O

Can someone help me out here with some specifics/details about this thing??

Thanks!

you’re 2013? don’t worry about it. they explain everything in calso.

First, read [Home Page - Office Of The Registrar](http://registrar.berkeley.edu) and it will explain a lot about telebears.

The telebears system is used to register for classes. You log into it at [Tele-BEARS Referral Page](http://telebears.berkeley.edu) but will need two things before you can register. First, you enter the Advisor Code that is handed to you at CalSO. Your ID is set up to require this before you can register - that ensures that you have had some training and counseling before you start signing into classes. Second, you have a telebears appointment set up for you, seniors are in general earliest and so forth downwards, but entering freshmen get a decent slot during their CalSO. Earlier CalSO sessions are better than later because this is your phase I appointment your first time at Cal.

Students are given times to register, but to provide some fairness the system allows you to register in only a max of 10.5 units during your first ‘shot’ at it, called phase I. Later, you have a second appointment for phase II which is where you fill out your schedule up to your target, for many that is 15 or 16 units of classes. Classes have a unit count assigned to them, which is vaguely, but only vaguely, related to the time you spend for the class.

Thus, an important question is ‘which classes should I do in phase I?’ - the idea of phase I being that most people have a fair shot of getting into their prioritized most important classes, through phase I, but the classes you leave to phase II have a higher chance of being full. Students make this decision on a variety of factors, including historical patterns of the class filling early or having openings even at the start of the semester. Also, however, you may have a class that meets only one time, and therefore you need to be sure that ANOTHER class you will take is taken in the sections that don’t conflict with your first class. In order to get into the section you want, you might ‘phase I’ a course even though it won’t fill totally, because the more desireable sections might fill early. Another reason is that you may abhor 8AM labs, but so do many others, making the afternoon labs fill up really quickly. Another situation - you might have a class that is given only once every two years, and it is something you absolutely need for your major. Finally, you may need a class that is a pre-req to another, and to be able to sign up for the other class next semester, you HAVE to take the pre-req this semester. Of course, it may be some class you are totally fascinated with and hope to get into, even though it isn’t critical. If it is left to Phase II, you might not get in this time around, but can try again in future semesters.

There are a lot more details and complexities, but as 8s has said, this will be explained during your CalSO visit. Your college will also point you at some material in advance of CalSO, as for example [Office of Undergraduate Advising - What’s New](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu) for the College of Letters and Sciences.

Hey rider730:

My Telebear account says my appointment is June 5, so is that when I register for classes?

Or do I NEED to go to CalSo in order to sign up and register? If so, am I screwed because there is only one session (the last one) still available?

yoiu need both an advisor code and that your appointment time has come. YOu need CalSO. sorry

You can get an advisor code in July if you don’t go to CalSO.

my tele-bears says my phase I appointment is June 5th but I’ll be attending CalSo on a later date. Is this a mistake or is my appointment really set on June 5th?

You will need an Advisor Code to register, not just a telebears time. Until you have both, an AC and a date on or after your phase I appointment, you won’t be able to register.

Alright, but I’m attending CalSO on July 6-7, which is the second-to-last date.

My question is, will all the good classes already be filled up?
