Television Studio Production..what colleges?

My son applied to and was accepted to Emerson College. Problem..we cannot afford it. He is going to apply to Hofstra (they have rolling admission). I would love for him to go to a state school (we live in NH), but no one seems to offer this major.. any advise is greatly appreciated

Will you be able to afford Hofstra?

How much can you pay each year?

He actually applied to Hofstra this morning. We can probably afford to take out PLUS loans for $20K per year.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that they will offer more aid than Emerson (who offered us nothing)

My older son applied to Hofstra a few years ago. Their financial aid averages, last I checked are not good. At the time, they were one of the most generous with merit aid. My son was a B+ kid, with high SAT scores for Hofstra. He was offered 16,000 in merit aid, which was sizable in 2006. They did ask for a climbing GPA over 3 semesters (went up to a 3.2 after 3 semesters) to keep the award: went 3.0 to 3.1 to 3.2. I thought the GPA was too steep for me to sleep nights, so he did not attend. If your son got into Emerson, he might be offered generous merit aid at Hofstra. If you can live with the parameters that they set to keep the award, Hofstra could be a good option.

Have you looked into Rowan (NJ state school, and I don’t think OOS is so much more than instate tuition. I believe they have some merit aid as well)? I had heard that their communications department is good, and the price could work for you, but I am not sure about “television studio production”.

Another option might be striking a deal of community college for 2 years, and then the expensive private for 2 years. A friend of mine did this with her D who really wanted to attend NYU. It did work out for them.

*We can probably afford to take out PLUS loans for $20K per year.
*

Is that in addition to your EFC? Or is that to cover your EFC?

Will you be able to borrow $20k in Plus every year? ($80k total) Or, is the $20k a max for you. If so, then this doesn’t sound like a good plan. Your monthly payments would be HUGE. Nearly 1,000 a month for 10 years!

There have been other parents on his board that took out Plus loans for years one and two, but then couldn’t qualify for Plus loans for years three and four.

If I were you… I would have my son go to a cc for 2 years to get his general ed requirements. During that time, I would pay off the credit card debt that you mentioned in the other thread and save for the EFC. Otherwise, you’ll be burying yourself in debt that you probably will never come out from.

I realize that you feel desperate right now. But, the answer isn’t making things worse by taking on huge debt that will be impossible to repay.

Look into SUNY New Paltz
[State University of New York at New Paltz: Communication & Media - Majors: Radio/TV Production](http://www.newpaltz.edu/comm_media/radiotv.html)

Good suggestion!!!

Willow…
I realize now from your other threads that you may have thought that a scholarship would reduce your current EFC of $18k. No. Even if your son had gotten a scholarship from Emerson, that would have been part of his FA package.

You say that Emerson hasn’t offered you anything. I don’t think Emerson has sent FA packages yet. Scholarships are kind of separate in a way. They get awarded with acceptance letters. FA packages will come later.

However, since someone on another thread said that Emerson doesn’t meet need (don’t know if that’s true), that school is probably not do-able since the FA package will likely contain more loans (in addition to the loans that you intend to take out for your EFC).

look into SUNY New Paltz! That sounds like a great idea!!! It may still not be affordable this year, but certainly for years 3 and 4.

Consider High Point in NC and check out the other SUNYs
