Thanks for the article warblers. My younger S, a rising senior, will likely apply to Western. He's not a city kind of guy and will hopefully thrive in the Cullowhee environment.

algebra 1 in 8th grade...

I took it in 6th XD and am taking pre-cal in 9th...

northeastmom If you are at Holden Beach you are <1 hr from UNC-W for sure.
Just down the road off Highway 17 N. It is an easy drive and easy to find UNC-W. Anyone in the area could give you directions.

Noname, Thanks. There aren't any other colleges within that area, are there? I just happened to notice that UNC-W would be close, so this will probably be the first school that my son will be looking at for himself (he went to other schools when we were looking for his older brother).

Yes, UNC-Wilmington is a hop, skip and a jump from the beach. Academically, it offers one of the few undergraduate Marine Biology programs (that's typically a graduate field of study). The history program also appears to be comprehensive. I've visited the campus and it is attractive with classic brick architecture and the students and administrators seem very proud of their school. As a town I thought the city was so-so, but the campus is in the heart of a comercial/shopping area. Make sure to visit the ice cream restaurant across the street from the main gate.

The old part of Wilmington down on the waterfront is really pretty.

If you want to go the opposite direction from Holden Beach, you could head down to South Carolina (near Myrtle Beach) and check out Coastal Carolina University.

northeastmom, we love Holden, go there every year. Love to eat at the Provision Company.

Lake Washington and Pack Mom thank you. I need to take notes about the food suggestions, thanks. I think that I will skip Coastal Carolina, b/c the average stats are a bit low and it will be 1.5 hours each way. I am going to keep it in mind if we don't have beach weather (or golf weather for H).

Pack Mom, Why do you like Holden? Is there anything to do, or do you just go there for a nice beach? We are going b/c my BIL and SIL live in NC and they wanted to vacation with us. They chose the Holden Beach. I know nothing about it.

Rightfit, have you visited UNCA yet? One negative I have heard is that it is somewhat of a commuter school--that many kids go home on the weekends.

Please share your impressions with us.

Rightfit- I second dg5052 request for some feedback on UNC-Asheville.

On another thread I mentioned that most public schools are generally "commuter schools" in that a large % of students go home for the weekend- except for the "elite" flagship publics I still think that may hold true

Asheville is such a cool town. If I went to school there, I wouldn't go home on weekends! I know of a girl from our school who went to UNCA as an art major. She is a rising senior now. Don't see her back home much. We live about 2 hours from Asheville.
