-National (Language) Honor Society (but I was an officer)

-AMC score of >90 in 10th grade (this better not be useless)

-Attended the Connecticut Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (I somehow got an award for this, where would I even put it on the application?)

Your AMC score is definitely not useless, but I am unsure about the other ones.
It wouldn’t hurt you to put all of these down, I’m assuming. Why not, anyhow?

Awards are nice, but generally they don’t mean much unless they are extremely prestigious. You could probably get away with not having any awards. They might add sparkle to an application but they really don’t show much about the applicant other than the fact that he isn’t completely incompetent.

You should list all of them. School awards are NOT useless. They show that you are amongst the best and the brightest at your school. You should give a brief description of what the award was for as well.
Good luck and congrats on all of the awards!

Everything except the first two should be listed! And maybe even the first two. I just don’t know what they are hahaa! But the rest are legit! Congrats.

Bitesize, what was the point of that comment? One, the thread is about awards, not clubs. Secondly, Being an officer helps, sure. But colleges want to see that you are highly involved and motivated in clubs and organizations, not that you are Super captain master of the Universe.

The point of the comment was addressing the OP’s question. NHS is nice, but it’s still useless if you’re not an officer to any even moderately competitive school. The OP was also in NLHS so I would put that.

Also, regarding your comment, any “highly involved” student would be an officer to begin with eventually. (Perhaps not their first year, but in subsequent years). I never said that he should try to become an officer of many clubs, just that being members of clubs alone is useless and is just unnecessary filler to an application. If he is trying to apply to a non competitive school and has low stats, then sure it might help. Otherwise, I would only display things that actually would help you. (In the OP’s case, NLHS, Yale Book Club Award, Rensselaer Medal and AMC score)

Yeah…I can’t believe I didn’t become an officer. I ran for tutor co chair, and at my school you first get people to nominate you, then you get people to vote for you, and then the top three write an essay. Guess how I didn’t get picked (hint: I’m scared about my college essay, and kids with lower stats than me got into a summer program while I didn’t - the only thing on the app besides stats was an essay). ■■■. I had HUGE plans for tutor co chair too. I was going to target the lower level classes, create an after school tutoring center for kids who would do homework in the library anyway, and all those things just went down the drain. Sorry this whole post was just a complaint.

Elbeen, are you actually familliar with my last award? Because you said everything besides the first two should be on there.

Ok, I will put most of them down, except for National Honor Society. However since I did get past the nomination and the vote, is it worth it to list it and mention that I was “nominated for tutor co chair”?
