^not going to lie, this is going to be a tough sell to the admissions, your sat score is low, gpa isn’t spectacular, what sort of a school do you go to? if it’s an international / american school in India, it’s probably filled with rich drop-outs, and a 3.75 might not be upto par. If it’s one of the best schools in the country and sends say 5 kids to the ivies each year then your gpa might cut it.

In terms of ECs you’re only deeply involved in martial arts, while you’ve really pursued this and accomplished a good amount, you don’t have too much to show that you’re well rounded. the 50 hours of community isn’t much, just sitting around working in a reputable company without doing something you’re passionate about is not going to help much. from this limited profile it comes across more as resume padding than actual involvement, and college don’t care much for resume padding.

I’m being harsh, because each year at columbia there are 3-5 indians, which means you’ll have to be one of the top 6-7 applicants in the whole country. They like to see people who have been involved in different (often weird / unique) stuff. I know a girl from India who complied a set of poems from famous people in india (she got them to submit poems for the cause) and sold that to raise money for unicef, I don’t know if that got her in, but she made it here. Needless to say she had fantastic grades, sat scores and other activities i assume.

well my school isnt American but it is the biggest one in our city. we have three branches in our city and others are coming up in 6 other cities. i m in the top 1% of my class. otherwise i thought my SAT score was low too. and the work experience was in a IT company and i want to major in computer science so just let me know if it makes a difference will you??

thanks.

“and the work experience was in a IT company and i want to major in computer science so just let me know if it makes a difference will you??”

there’s no formula, this helps if you were involved in some significant project in the IT firm, and were passionate and excited by it. If you weren’t you can even write about that and criticize IT companies in India, and how their activities [or what they gave you] don’t fulfill your passion for the discipline.

as for being in the top 1%, here’s the question: how big is it and how many people get into ivy [or equivalent] universities each year? If you have only a few outliers get in over the years it’s going to be tough, if several go each year then your academics are decent. when was the last ime someone got in to columbia from your school?

i dont think neone has got into columbia form our school, but our students have got into to top universities in India. just last year about 6 - 8 of our students were selected to the Indian Institutes of Technology. thts the best universities in the country. as for the number of students, therell be about 7000 of them. one student got into JHU the year before last and many got into GA Tech, UIUC and ones like that. as for the academics thats government regulated. does that make it credible enough??

Ah, school grades and IIT acceptances have almost no correlation :). JHU is good though. Are your grades comparable to the JHU dude’s?

well the sat scores dont, in the school exams i exceed him.
