I went to Governor's School of Public Issues in the
summer- kids at my school say everyone from our
school who has gone to gov are pretty much guaranteed
at least one ivy ( i know that's just talk, but I thought I'd
put that in there)

I would think Smith and Bryn Mawr are also safe although all bets are off this year. Hard to believe an ivy is likely with a 1440 and average ECs.

Passionflower8, a child of a friend had similar stats, although lower SATs, and received a Marquis Scholarship of 30 k annually from Layfayette. However, he was 1 out of 200. Is your rank high?

my school doesn't rank
that is really encouraging news about lafayette
how are humanities at lafayette? in looking through their grad placement, it didn't seem as though many went on to great law, grad schools

My daughter recieved a Marquis Scholarship- based on SAT's, grades, involvement. She attended and loved it. Lafayette loves students like you but now even more competitive than 4 years ago. You have a great chance for the scholarship. Humanities is excellent. She was an econ. major/Spanish minor. Is now at Columbia U. in education/education policy going for her Masters. You can go anywhere you want from any of your chosen schools - just have to keep working hard! Good luck! Parent of student at Columbia grad., Dickinson and Emory. Wow!

yeah, but lacs attract different students than cornell and penn
possibly even more qualified and thoughtful of the admissions process, but i think it's safe to say a good number of people just say "o , number 1 and 2, must be good", and apply. i guess what i'm trying to say is lacs i think are more self selected than other schools, and by virtue of being 1 and 2 on the lac list, i would guess williams and amherst draw a fair number of applicants who just see the rank, know it's not an ivy, and figure they have a shot.

I do hope you get to visit your schools. My d. turned down Williams for Smith, and the differences were so striking that I doubt she would have been happy at the former (and it's my alma mater.) Similarly, I doubt there are many Bryn Mawr students who might be completely happy at Washington & Lee. So be sure you know what you are looking for.

i'm really looking for a good poli sci dept, individual attention and the chance to go to washington
i know that w and l is a lot different than bryn mawr. i know bm is very very liberal, while wl may be conservative by lac standards. also, i've kind of gotten the vibe that wl people are the polo wearing type, and bryn mawr are more the hogwarts cape wearing type. obviously these are huge and wrong stereotypes.
personally i'm liberal politically but also catholic and spiritual. i have a lot of respect for conservatives who know what they're talking about and its fun to debate/ i worry that at the liberal liberal arts colleges, there wouldn't be a healthy diversity of opinion.
i really like what i see of smith so far. i wish i could visit. i love the open curriculum, study abroad opportunities, etc. also the all women thing sounds pretty interesting- what would we be like in a vacuum?
thanks so much for your help
please give me more info on student body, etc, especially at smith.

My daughter is "middle of the road" politically and feels very comfortable at BMC. Her friends range in political views - there are even BMC replublicans and Smith republicans! The most exciting event on campus recently was Bill Clinton's visit...he was "awesome." My daughter has found most girls "normal" (regular kids - like high school, but less into clothes and smarter) but doesnt mind the input of the quirky few! REALLY the best thing to do is VISIT and TALK TO SOME REAL STUDENTS. Get the vibe of these schools. Chat people up in the cafeteria. Don't make yourself too crazy - things will work out.
