Lately I've realized that I've become way too obsessed with this school. I've stopped thinking about my other colleges, I've started doodling cartoon owls all over my notebooks, I've been stocking up on summer clothes when temperatures here are in the negatives...

So, to ease the pain of my impending rejection, could you guys please share with me some drawbacks and bad aspects of Rice?

Most of the professors and TAs and brilliant people here, but sadly some of them can't teach a course to save their lives. You might end up having a professor who's Nobel prize worthy for his research but whose teaching style just isn't good (or doesn't work for you). But I guess that's a problem at any university...

Anyway it's just something I've noticed. There are a lot of really good professors but there is also a share of terrible ones, and then there's everything in between. Rice is not all peaches and cream.

I'd say the lack of name recognition in some areas of the country compared to other schools of equal caliber totally sucks. Not saying that nobody knows what Rice is, but a majority of the people I talk to don't know what I'm talking about. When I say I'm applying to Rice or Rice is my first choice, the response I get is "Where's that?" You don't even wanna know the response I get for saying it's in Texas...

I also hear it can get quite hot down there...

O my gosh I'm the exact same way, not even kidding! Like I was playing picture bingo with the kids I babysit the other day and I took the owl piture even though it wasn't on my board... I can't think of aything bad about rice either.

Boys. Lots of awkward boys who don't know what to do around girls they like, or how to be aggressive and pursue someone, or who can't work up the courage to take the initiative in relationships. Or lots of unattractive boys who think they fantastic when they get drunk. Or unattractive boys who won't go for girls of a similar level and then complain about never getting action. I wrote up a multi-page "Rice Boys" rant last November and it's been well-received.

I'm sure similar problems exist with the gentler sex but I don't have to deal with them so I don't care =)

I kind of wish there were more food places on campus. The serveries have limited hours and the only other choice most of the time is 13th street or going off campus. Also I hate how the shuttle to target only goes 4 hours a week. I have to plan my saturday around it so i dont have to bother someone for a ride.

sffhgoalie73, my thoughts exactly. There have been many a night when I've wanted something to eat-but everything is closed and my car is out by the stadium and I'm too lazy to walk to it.

dude! bron bron is awesome. i feel in love with him the day during o week when he got in the middle of a huge student circle and danced!

the only boys that you can have a conversation with are the athletes and the english/ academs (take it from me, the english boys are HOT). most engineering/ science boys are a big NO NO. as in, they don't know how to keep a conversation going. i don't mean to be mean but... it's quite true.
also, there is a name for creepy boys at rice (it's just now starting up lol): CARB. Creepy Awkward Rice Boy. NO CARBS!
(for chicks, you can say ARGs but that hasn't caught on as much...)

other than that... the weather can get pretty sucky but it's whatever.

I'm only a lowly pre-frosh but you girls need to lay off on calling the guys at rice creepy/ugly... I've seen the admissions packets and was at rice last year, I wasn't to impressed with most of the girls I saw.

"Okay, so the general consensus is that Rice is ugly (except for anxiousmom's kids). =]"
lol, I like how this whole discussion started to focus on Rice students' physical appearances after silentsailor's post.
Well, this has been thoroughly amusing to read... now back to my English paper.

My D, her freshman year roomies, sophomore year roomies, junior year roomies, and next year's roomies all fall into a range friom cute to gorgeous PLUS charming personalities. The guys I've met are pretty much the same.

You want something "bad" about Rice? Hmmmm, the upper level bioscience classes are hard (yes, I know, it's Rice) and the exams (usually 2 or 3 test and a final) cover LOTS of material.
